Amazon put Breaking Dawn (book 4 of Twilight) and Brisingr (book 3 of Eragon) in my gold box today.

Yesterday, they offered me my choice of Stargate: Continuum, Chuck: Season 1, Burn Notice:  Season 1 and Eureka: Season 2.  Today, they give me those two, and books that I already own and bought from them.

Amazon suggestions suck. I bought one romance novel-- one, ever, as a gift! And now that's all that hits my suggestion box beyond Fullmetal Alchemist (relic of the ex-boyfriend).

Yeah. Sometimes they make me tear my hair out choosing, and then somedays they baffle me. I wouldn't mind as much if so much of it weren't things I bought from Amazon already. I mean, do they think I need extra copies?

That's what frustrating. If you've bought one edition of something, they assume you want all editions of it. It's particularly bad with classics, where they'll offer you many different translation of The Odyssey, for instance.

You can set Amazon to not use specific purchases to influence recommendations, I've discovered.

o_o Really.... how is this done?

From: [identity profile] fairest1.livejournal.com
Step 1: Go to your recommendations page.
Step 2: Identify book you have no wish to be associated with.
Step 3: Look for the line below the "I own this/Not interested" check boxes that says " Recommended because you purchased . . .(Fix This)"
Step 4: Click 'Fix This'.
Step 5: Remove checkmark from beside "Use this book to make recommendations."
Step 6: Refresh the page.
Step 7: Cheer as horrible books vanish.

Step 8: Watch more horrible books appear.
Step 9: Repeat.

Though in all seriousness, thanks. After a thorough cleaning I am starting to get actual recommendations.

It's not my fault Amazon's broken! I suggested what I did for the most workable fix, but it's Amazon's fault that ordering Enchanted will make them think you'll like Lars and the Real Girl.

I am still laughing myself silly over the supposed Breaking Dawn spoilers. Because, man, if they are true, the series is even more full of fail than we ever expected.

It was so awesome reading those all way as Hyper Boy With Glasses got more and more sedated and dazed.

And yet...even not having read the bok...they were obvious spoilers, you know?

How can spoilers make it fail beyond the limits of our expectations? I didn't think she had that much imagination.

I think it's the fact that they only meet our lowest expectations.

Or maybe I just don't have enough imagination.

What were the spoilers?

I don't want to post spoilers here since there are Twilight fans on the f-list who might want to avoid the spoilers, so heres the wank report. The links lead to spoiler posts.

I'm seesawing between 'that's the dumbest bad-fanfic mary sue ending ever' and laughing my head off. So ridiculous!

Based on my shortlived attempt to read it and everything I've heard, that's the entire series once you remove "ending."

I thought it was just mediocre until the second book where his absence made her start doing stupid suicidal things to 'hear his voice' in her head.

Since the heroine being utterly dependant on the hero's presence is one of my three biggest and nastiest squick-buttons, I threw it down then and there and nearly vomited in the aisle. It was only later when I read two hilarious critiques of the book that I realized quite how bad it had been.

Amazon is really good at saying "I see you've bought Blade of the Immortal volume 8 from us. Would you be interested in volumes 1-7?"

Date: 2008-07-29 05:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
Yup. Also "I see you bought Volume 1...would you like volume 8? Surely you don't need the ones in between." Also "would you like an extra copy of that?"

My Amazon recommendations are reasonably sane, due to me having the odd OCD-ish period where I spend a few hours going through every page of recommendations and saying if I'm not interested or already own something.

They started noticing my more obscure choices, I can tell -- my recommendations page now has several items that aren't even in stock.

You should see the insanity that results from having an amazon.com account, but never ever having purchased anything from them using it.

... hmmm, if "Eragon" is a typo for "Dragon", then what's "Brisingr" a typo for? "Bringing"? "Breathing"?

I wish they were typos.
