rightstuf.com's current sale is 33% of CMX comics, 40% off if you're in their club thingie.  I highly approve of this, as I've been waiting for that and a Go!Comi sale (which I don't think they'll ever have...another few weeks and i'll have to concede defeat and pay a bit more for a few things at Amazon...)

Has anyone read The Empty Empire, From Eroica With Love (I'm positive someone recced it to me...[personal profile] smillaraaq?) Key to the Kingdom, or Musashi Number Nine?

From Eroica With Love is funny, but for whatever reason didn't really grab me, at least within the first two or three volumes (I forget how many I read). It's sort of the BL version of Lupin, if you've read that. I do appreciate the careful 70s-ness of the translation.

Musashi #9 = kinda stupid. The protagonist should guarantee that I like it, but the writing's so terrible and the art's so stiff that I didn't go further than the first volume.

Doesn't live up to the badass assassin girl promise, then?

She would be badass if the manga were interested in things that are badass. It is instead interested in people sitting around talking about, um, the mangaka's weird ideas about global politics, I think. And bird metaphors.

I read the first volume of this and found it very, very dull. I think I actually took it back to the store the next day. I did hear later, though, that as she gets more personally invested in goings on that it gets more interesting. I'll probably give it a second chance someday.

Oh, and if you're in the market for magical girl shoujo crack by someone apparently suffering from a head injury, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne has you covered. The plot is that the reincarnation of Joan of Arc is an art thief (for God), but the reincarnation of Sinbad is after her. It actually makes even less sense than that.

I'm not sure I can recommend it on the grounds that it's any good, but it goes at this premise with incredible energy. And every time you go "oh my god that's the most blasphemous thing ever," it goes and tops itself. The finale is impressive that way.

Are we talking more or less insanely brain-breaking sacrilicious crack than Let's Bible!?

It's kind of less overt - I don't think we ever actually see God/Satan/Jesus, and I'm certain that none of them is a girl whose shirt keeps coming open. But Let's Bible! seemed (from what I read of it, anyway) to be intentionally trying to be ridiculous, and Tanemura is perfectly sincere. In the finale we learn that (spoilers) God was lonely, so he created a multiple personality and that was Satan (this is all extra-awesome given the crap that Satan has been doing), and Jeanne weeps and touches his cheek or something and makes it better, and I think there's no more Satan anymore after that.

That's a couple thousand years of theology we're going to have to rewrite, Jeanne. Thinks a lot.

I'm forced to confess: Arina Tanemura is the only one to take giant shoujo eyes and sparkles to levels that scare me.

I think the only mangaka whose eyes rival Tanemura's face-percentage-wise is Megumi Tachikawa. (Cooincidentally, she also did a master-thief-for-God manga, Saint Tail.)
