Angel Sanctuary Vol 5

This volume needed more Kurai, Kira and Sara.
No spoilers for future volumes without the spoilercode, please. I suspect it's going to get harder and harder to make many comments without spoilers from this point on.

I just randomly spout things off, for this is Kaori Yuki manga, and explaining it won’t make much difference:
Katan as mindless child eater: Bad.
Katan acquiring wee cute thing that will guide him down the non-child-eating path: Good. I hope.
Why must so many characters hate women(ok, I actually can’t think of a lot, but it seemed a bit prominent in this volume)? This is especially true for Sevothtarte-who I am convinced isa woman-and Kato. Kato, why must you be so anti-woman? Why must you talk about how you would beat your girlfriends if you thought they were getting serious? Do you not realize this keeps me from liking you? If you could just like one or two, it would make me happy. Here, let me throw Kurai at you. No one with a soul could dislike her, no matter how much they bickered.
I like Doll and Uriel, with his major mood swings. And he’s another who was in love with Alexiel. (So he made a living doll! Who looks just like the true love of Setsuna! Who is the gender switched reincarnation of Alexiel!) Was anyone not in love with Alexiel? Not that I blame them, really, but…
So, the fourth angel is Jibril/Gabriel? Who is a lifeless husk in the gardens? Kinda like Alexiel at Kurai’s place? I vote that she is really Sara.
I think, though, that this was the best part of the volume(paraphrased, of course):
Setsuna: Hey, you aren’t that bad without the mask! You’re nice!
Uriel: *starts angsting and totally freaks out and flings people through walls*
Doll: *splashes him with water*
Uriel: AAAH!! The evil! It is still within me! Angst!
Doll: No messes! I have to clean!
Kato: *sucks up just to be on the safe side*
And finally: SETSUNA! MORE WANGSTING OVER SARA! You…uhm…kind of aren’t as interesting when you aren’t doing that…
And now I shall go off chanting” Rosiel is male! Male! No matter that he looks more feminine and has better hair than every female in the book combined, he is male!” Because I really do have problems remembering that at times.
Katan as mindless child eater: Bad.

Date: 2008-08-19 04:41 am (UTC)OK, spoilery stuff here: Sevothtarte is indeed female, and does a reasonably good job of hiding it. Your hunch about Jibril and Sara is right in the sense that Sara's soul inhabits Jibril's body later on.
Non-spoilery stuff: I felt so sorry for Katan. He goes through so much just because he loves Rosiel. Where Kato is concerned, I reckon he says stuff like that so he doesn't have to deal with people getting close to him, and him getting close to them. I loved Doll, she's awesome. ^^
The problem I had with Rosiel in terms of art is that I started Godchild just after finishing Angel Sanctuary. Cain and Riff in Godchild looked so much like Rosiel (with short hair) and Katan living in Victorian England it wasn't funny. I knew it was different characters but for the first volume or so my eyes refused to believe it. Even Mary Weather (Cain's sister) looked like a younger version of Sara to me. ^^;

Date: 2008-08-19 05:35 am (UTC)The thing with Kato is that there's almost an underlying theme of female=bad. Kurai I get, as she was almost raped when they learned she was a girl, and Alexiel made the comment about it being easier if she were reborn a male. Then there's Alexiel, the warrior angel, making that comment. Add to that Kato's attitude and Sevothtarte's treatment of women, and there's a trend. It'd be easier if I knew how seriously to take the comments about beating his girlfriends. So far, the only "Good" (in terms of the text acknowledging her as being morally so, or at least a protagonist, not "a good character") female characters we have (who is also biologically female) who hasn't expressed a dislike for being female are Sara and Doll. And I'm not sure Doll counts. The others are evil, would rather be men, or crossdressers. Now, while I love Doll, Sara, Alexiel and Kurai (and had great fun with Rosiel's little girlfriend in the school uniform before she died) I can't help but be a little iffy about that.
I knew I would love Doll forever when she splashed Uriel and started lecturing him.
I haven't read Godchild/Cain Saga yet (I have the first 2 volumes of CS waiting, but that'll probably wait until after I finish AS) so I hadn't noticed Cain and Riff's similarities, but I have Mary Weather's. I was happy when I got Fairy Cube as saw that Rin looked different.
