Canon Sues!

Fictional character (mostly manga so far) are being subjected to The Universal Mary Sue Litmus Test and tallied up at

telophase's LJ here.  

I took it for 11 Samurai Deeper Kyo characters.  Only Yuya, Mahiro and Okuni escape "kill it dead" territory.  Actually, of all characters tested so far, Kyo is the Sue-est of them all at 138, and Okuni the least-Sue of all at 8.

Go take it for your favorite/least favorite characters!

 

ETA:  Someone tested Miaka 4 times ranging from very strict to very lenient, and came out with a median score of 179.  I say this without comment and only because a few might find it interesting.

I'm trying to take it for Aeris now. It's a little harder working with non-written characters, I think, and also if you're not the creator of the character. For example, there's a question about whether or not the character has a piercing gaze. I might say yes because that's the impression I got, but should that really count?

Yeah. With manga characters, it's easier because the artists tend to emphasize things with more detail, like staring.

Hmm...at my nicest and most lenient, I can't get him below 100...

At my most harsh I can only get him up to a 70. What are we doing differently?

Did you do "does it count if...?" or "I'm not sure this would count because..." or anything along those lines?

If you did any of that, automatically count it. That kind of thought tends to be subconsciously making an excuse.

This is why, IMO, the term 'sue' is not as applicable for lead characters. My favorite leads are the Sue-y-est Sues that ever Sued, but they're leads, dammit!

Hmm...I think it's applicable for lead characters, but I think that, if they're given complexities and faults, they get to escape.
