Claymore Vol 12

Hmm…ah, yes, this is the part I got to and started worrying that Claymore had ruined me for all other shounen. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem to have actually ruined me, but it was a close call, and there’s a touch of bitterness now with others.
WARNING! There be no coherency past this point.
Ok, Him-What-Will-Be-Clare’s-Handler (Rubel?) specifically pointed out to Rafaela that the was Awakened One ruling over the East. Have we been told anything interesting about the East?
And Rafaela hugging Luciela to death! Seriously. And seeing wee!Teresa! Hmm..and stumbling across the town Alicia and Beth’s family lived in, just after they were taken by the organization. I missed that the first time through.
But most importantly it is the beginning of the era of badass black leather! I reach this point and lose the ability to think.
Looking at the flashback to Miria’s plan and the aftermath, it occurs to me that she’s probably the only one who’s really safe from awakening. It may have been a threat before, but at this point she’s too obsessed with saving everyone (and too into her own feelings of unworthiness when she fails) and getting justice for the fallen to really lose it. Now if we could just work on her self esteem…She’s still just about the most awesome thing to ever happen to shounen, though.
And Yuma talking about how she’s so honored that a low ranker like her gets to be with the high ranking ones. And saying it to Clare. Did they just never trade numbers or something?
I still want to know how Helen survived 7 years in the north. Maybe she took on Clare-babysitting duties a few times, and stocked up on abandoned beer when she did. And instructed the others to get her beer when they went with Clare on her Raki-hunts. You could tell it had been too long since she had a new victim for pigtail pulling when she saw Clarice, though.
On the subject of the new Claymores:
I like Audrey and Rachel. More Audrey, though. Even if they are pretty much just respectively a more polite Deneve and rougher Helen. Or maybe because.
This one is an unpopular opinion with the fandom at large (though not as much with the personal f-list) but I also like Clarice and Miata. Miata is pretty much the physical representation of how far the organization will go, and how screwed up they can make the Claymores. Clarice is essentially what everyone thought Clare was: useless deadweight, weaker than anyone else. She’s someone who couldn’t fully undergo the process, but got tossed on the front lines because they needed to keep the ranks full. When the other Claymores are dismissive of her and call her deadweight and don’t want anything to do with her, it isn’t bullying. She’s supposed to be a 4th who will watch their backs, but unqualified to (through no fault of her own) and is either going to get killed, or require their protection when they should be focusing on other things. But that also makes her be the only one able to clue in that something is going on in the north.
Also, they make breast feeding a legitimate plot point.

Date: 2008-08-30 08:01 pm (UTC)I think that Yuma just automatically considers Clare to be higher-ranked than her, despite their actual numbers.
Perhaps sniffing out booze is one of Helen's super-sekkrit Claymore abilities--or she could have tried to have Tabitha scout it out for her. "Whaaaat? You mean you can't sense where there's beer?" "Um, no, it's just for yoki, I swear...." *still can't remember which one's Tabitha and which one's Cynthia*
I never thought that hard about Audrey and Rachel.
You know my thoughts on Clarice and Miata. Fandom doesn't like them? Really? But their dynamic is so disturbing and wrong.

There was actually wank a while back about how Clarice and Miata are turning the book into stupid fanservice.

Date: 2008-08-30 10:24 pm (UTC)Of course, we've only seen Helen get hammered once and are blowing it out of proportion.
What?! Miata is the least fanservicey character ever--well hello there, covered in the blood of youma she'd just ripped apart with her bare hands. The breastfeeding is creepy and unsexy, and Clarice clearly doesn't enjoy it. The two of them running around a monastery in towels was just a segue into the discussion of what Claymores have on their stomachs. (I think it's tentacles, by the way. Little tiny tentacles, like an anemone.)

Date: 2008-08-30 10:33 pm (UTC)I think the only thing that's ever come close to fanservice in the series is Ophelia's...uhm...molestation. The rest has very clearly not meant to be titillating. That wasn't either, except for Ophelia.
Given Riful and *spoiler future fight for those who haven't read ahead*, I suspect you may be right.

Date: 2008-08-30 11:21 pm (UTC)Well, Riful is a different story with the *spoilers* and Audrey and Rachel. I could see her *spoilering* Claymores with her *spoilers* to break Claymore's minds and force them to awaken, on the off chance that ripping off their limbs and watching them regenerate them only to rip them off again didn't do it. But that could be just me, though.
Wow, that wasn't obvious as to what I was talking about.

Date: 2008-08-31 03:16 am (UTC)My brain tried to come up with some other way to process that, because it is not something that had happened in Claymore up to that point. But no. There were several pages where that woman's hind end was very prominent.
