Do Umi and Fuu remind anyone else a bit of Kurogane and Fai? Only, you know, sans the unhealthy levels of angst. And “Zomg! Look! We’re deep in the closet!” I think it’s Umi and Kurogane’s deep and abiding one-sided rivalry with their respective Mokona’s.
Ok, Clamp, I realize that manga likes “swirly lines=action,” and that it’s even prominent in Tsubasa, but you had so many swirly lines here that I couldn’t tell what was going on half the time.
BUT! Emeraude summoned them to kill her! Because she fell in love with Zagato! Which endangered the world! She imprisoned herself! And Zagato was protecting her! And died! And she went evil from grief and tried to kill everyone! WTFKaori Yuki Clamp!
And now the world is saved and they went home? I think I’d shake my fist over the ending, except I know there’s MKR 2. (And why no comic at the end with Clamp?)
And theStandard Shounen Action And Ichigo Is Jealous power ups, they were even more obvious than in previous volumes. (All the “All for my friends!” talk only makes me want to compare it to shounen even more.) I think they were almost called powerups at one point. And it is now a mecha manga? I think I knew that, actually.
And Mokona, it is getting more mysterious. And kissing Umi, causing Fuu and Hikaru to bounce around like pingpong balls. Uhm, I kind of love Clamp’s chibis here.
I just wish I could tell how much I’d be liking this if I hadn’t been brainwashed by Clamp over the last year.

Date: 2008-09-02 09:55 pm (UTC)That's what it does. It sneaks up behind you and attacks you briefly, leaving you hyperaware to its cracktastic presence, and if you are weak, it sucks you into the fluffy, floral hive and gently eats your brain.

Date: 2008-09-03 02:28 am (UTC)I was madly in love with MKR and X/1999 for a bit when I was much, much younger (like twelve) but my enjoyment of the art style wore off and I found it hard to really get involved with any of the characters, and caput went my interest.
I rarely have the overload experience. **grin** Mostly I like 'em from the beginning or I don't.

Date: 2008-09-03 02:28 am (UTC)I stick around for Haruhi's deadpanness and Kyouya's evil, and the lulz. Always the lulz. It was the first manga that ever made me laugh out loud (as in, out loud-out loud, in a public place), so it'll always have a special place in my heart.

Date: 2008-09-02 11:41 pm (UTC)Oh... oh my god. I never thought about it before, but now that you've mentioned it, YES. That is both disturbing and awesome at the same time.
I never did finish all of MKR2. I really should, and I want to, but I can't seem to find the first volume anywhere. Maybe I need to look harder.
I reread the first three volumes of MKR not too long ago, and it made me think about how I've been brainwashed by recent CLAMP and shounen manga as well. Years ago when I first found MKR, I thought it was the greatest and most amazing thing ever. While I still love it and I did enjoy reading the first half again, I couldn't help but compare it to all the manga I've been reading recently. Kind of sad, really.

The first vol of MKR2 is kind of hard to find, but I have it now.
