Wallflower Vol 16

Every once in a while, I think about how nice it would be to have something resembling a real plot. Then I realize that would just get in the way.
We do, though, get some vaguely consistent characterization with Sunako trying to go out and about it the world on her own. With the boys rightly running right behind her. There and in the Valetines episode both, she employs very interesting tactics to rescue the boys from mobs of fans. Even if she was really just after the chocolate.
And I am very happy that it was Kyohei’s turn for a personality transplant. Sunako’s had new ones often enough that it was well past his turn. And, of course, it drives her rabidly insane. I’m surprised Ranmaru didn’t have more to say about being surpassed. Maybe he feared death too much.
The last story, with Sunako trying to lose wait, is the perfect example of why I continue to love and adore this series despite a general dislike of harem manga (of any gender combination) or makeover manga. In any other manga, that would have been Sunako worrying about her looks or being driven to lose weight to help the boys (or her love interest specifically) or Noi or whatever. Here, she couldn’t care less about that, or even about being overweight. She just thinks it’d be cool to have muscles and be more like Hiroshi and Josephine. Though I’m not sure Kyohei will ever recover from the fact that certain circumstances can drive even Sunako to tear off his clothes.
And I read this while making Wallflower icons at home, so I spent a lot of it distracted and thinking about cropping.
ETA: *looks over LJ for the day* Yeah, so, apparently it was a slow day otherwise. This is a lot even for me...

Date: 2008-09-30 03:21 am (UTC)But yeah, the actually quality is...not always there. But the spirit is always spot on. And every time you go "you know, this mangaka is actually a bit lazy..." she goes and kicks an annoying trope in the face and reminds us how awesome Sunako and Sunako/Kyohei is.
I mean, part of me will love the mangaka forever simply by taking the pretty, perfect, popular girl and having her adore the weird girl and be her cheerleader, and not only not fall for the rebel punk alpha lead, but be alternately annoyed by and ignore him
when not actively shipping Sunako/Kyoheiand go for the nice, slightly-social-awkward beta guy.no subject

Date: 2008-09-30 03:25 pm (UTC)every once in a while, we are gifted with vague semblances of a plot, like looks into their backgrounds and Sunako's relationship with her aunt and how much better she does in society than she did originally, but mostly, our plot is the mangakas list of annoying tropes and cliches to kick in the face.
