meganbmoore: (attack of the backlog)
[personal profile] meganbmoore
I have finally tracked down all parts of the manga backlog(err...there may be strays I haven't found yet, but I doubt it), which got a bit scattered and hidden during the cleaning spree a few weeks back. While I am a firm believer in stockpiling reading material in case of dire emergencies, I think it has passed the stockpiling stage. Ditto for comics. I'll probably do a separate post for them later. Trying to list the novels backlog would break LJ in half.

Anyway, tell me what to read. I didn't realize until I was putting them all together how far behind I'd fallen on some series. I'm probably going to leave off the posting on individual volumes for a bit and doing more 2-3 volume posts (already been starting to) to help with the catch up. (This doesn't include a few series where I'm missing the next volume or more, or manga I'm following in scans, as they don't properly count as backlog, though I'll likely knock them out first. I don't count Samurai Deeper Kyo in this, as what i've read through the end is a combination of scattered scans, raws, and translations.)

ETA: Cain Saga is only the first 2 volumes. Cursed "no editting polls."

I voted for various things but I rank Four Constables first because I've been eyeing that one for a long time and want someone else's opinion on it. Someone who might be the other half of my brain. :P

It's one of many series that I was getting when it first came out, but that disappeared, and then I got huffy and got rid of my canceled series.

IIRC, it was not amazing, but quite fun, and I liked the resident "look how smart and clever I am" guy more than I normally do.

Yes. This LJ is an exceptionally Yuya-friendly place.

She so cute. ;o; And so much love.

...which also goes to say I most certainly voted on SDK for readings. ♥ VOLUME THIRTY WAS AMAZING. I AM STILL SPAZZY OVER IT. But that might just be me. :'D

What surprises me the most is... SDK is my favourite manga, but I STILL DON'T HAVE ICONS FOR IT. WHAT.

Yes, yes she is.

There are a lot of SDK icons out there!

I guess I'm just stupidly picky about my icons as of late. Cryyy. Maybe I should suck it up and make my own, haha.

Does Hoshin Engi get better going in? I couldn't even finish volume 1, it was so incoherent.

Much, much better. It is not a series for the faint of heart, though, because it involves decapitation, cannibalism, cruelty, psychotic politics, and mind games *nods*

I think so. But then, I also watched the anime only a month or two before reading Vol 1, so it wasn't as bad. In general, though, I don't have any problems with it.

I considered deleting all of my other votes and only voting for Tokyo Babylon, but I figured I'd leave a comment instead, :D

Granted, I haven't read a lot of the manga on your list, so my votes are biased!

One day I will own this entire series! *shakes fist at Amazon, Borders, local comic shop*

I know how you feel. my friend is missing random volumes (like volume 20, which is ridiculously expensive! ;-; ) and I've been trying to slowly get her all the ones she needs. or I was before I lost my job.

From: [identity profile] mekosuchinae.livejournal.com
I'm sorry to hear about your job! I hope you can pick a new one up soon.

Also, ARGH, tell me about it. I'm praying Amazon won't run out of the few volumes they do have in stock before my next paycheck, 'cause I'm not really interested in paying $100+ for a single volume of manga, no matter how amazing and delicious and, and wonderful it is. Maybe eBay...?

*shakes fist some more*

x.x I really do think Basara volume 20 was a limited run of like 10 copies because they don't have it listed either...

::nods:: I do that with novels. graphic novels I tend to read right away (well the ones I dont' read scanlations of anyhow) and buy them within a month of their release (give or take). Basara...well I had been waiting for that for so long before it was actually licensed that I had all the volumes pre-ordered the second they hit the amazon site XD if I could have done a subscription pre-order service on the GN's I have.

Me too. I am a major hoarder, but run into this problem when I ponder acquiring series I didn't buy initially. Like Tramps Like Us, for which volume 6 is hard to find.

Several Clamp volumes have been a bit harder to find, but not actually costly.

unfortunately when I was able to search around on ebay I wasn't able to find volume 20 for very cheap (and by cheap I mean under $25). I don't understand why that is so expensive! did they make a shorter supply of those for some reason?

I know what you mean...Basara is gorgeous loving and when I saw the special edition boxset on ebay I was like $200? I AM THERE SCREW BILLS FOR THE MONTH! except I didn't because I am too responsible for that if I wasn't the new box archive edition of the complete FMA anime would SO BE MINE even if it is $600...

I double-checked on Amazon and YIKES, volume twenty is the ridiculously expensive one I remembered. $350 for a single volume of manga?! And oh my gosh, eBay is JUST AS BAD. Holy starlight! What is up with this?

did they make a shorter supply of those for some reason?

I've no idea, but it's really weird that this one volume is so much more expensive than the remainder of the series.

Responsibility! It is our bane, our curse. (But I want the Princess Tutu boxset noooooow.)

You never know, though! It just might pop up at a used bookstore.

It's going for $350? Seriously?

...

*wonders what other manga she has that sells for ridiculous amounts*

The only reason I haven't read these 2 volumes is that they're short stories instead of the main story, so I get to still have Basara to read without not knowing how things turned out.

you need ot read the last two volumes of Basara just for the funny. okay and the serious, but mostly the funny. when you read the funny you will know what I am referring to.

AU school crossdressing hijinks? The next generation as kids where Shuri and Sarasa's daughter is determined to marry Shido's son? (I have been convinced this will happen since, like, vol 6...)

Date: 2008-10-06 02:08 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lotuseyes.livejournal.com
that...would be awesome and sadly not the funny I was referring to. we do get a story set after the events of volume 25 (as well as 'catchups' to certain characters), but the other series is set before the series began regarding those four swords. the funny is...well it is AU and it does have to do with a school, of sorts, but not any crossdressing.

if'n I could find the rest of the Basaran doujins Tamura did I hear tell there is a story about Shuri and Sarasa's child, but I only got the 4th issue...can't find none of the other 3 or 4...

Date: 2008-10-06 02:52 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lotuseyes.livejournal.com
unfortunately no. I've been stalking Ebay for over a year now and only managed to find the one. according to this site all the short stories are part of the manga (http://www.fuuko.com/doujinshi/basara/index.htm) as extras, and at least one of them sounds like it is (the third one), but I don't know for certain.

With great restraint, I did not click Tactics and Cain Saga, because I suspect you will throw them against the wall. The women are all dead or evil.

Date: 2008-10-06 12:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
I read the first Tactics and enjoyed it well enough. Cain Saga...isn't his sister a main character? And if I can handle all the dead and evil women in Angel Sanctuary (I am convinced Sevothtarte is a woman-specifically, the one Uriel was accused of raping) I should survice Cain Saga. Besides which, Kaori Yuki does funny things to my head.

(I too am in the thrall of Kaori Yuki unearthly powers.) Cain's sister is a main character, but the thing with both Cain Saga and Tactics is that they have the Female Sexuality Is Evil And Must Be Controlled Or Destroyed problem really bad. The sister is mostly safe because she's a little girl, and Youko from Tactics because she's an asexual-yenta-type. But everybody else, not so much.

From: [identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com
Note that Cain Saga is quite misogynistic, and also kind of bad compared with Godchild, which is also misogynistic but has a great deal of artistic virtue and one female character of awesomeness (Cain's little sister.)

Date: 2008-10-06 03:51 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
(Belial! It took me a while to warm up to her, but I am now in love. I am convinced that not only is Belial/Universe the ultimate OTP of Angel Sanctuary, but also that it is the most canon thing in the series, and I'm pretty sure everything was canon under some incarnation or secret ID. End irrelevant squee caused by icon.)

I have a weird impression of Kaori Yuki and female characters. It's like she loves them, but gets so caught up fangirling her guys that she forgets about them, and then she goes "Oh! I need a villain/misogynist/psycho/manipulator...I haven't drawn a girl in a while!" I have seen Cain's sister favorably compared to Sara, so I am assuming I will love her.
