So, question for Girl Genius fans:

Is there any particular reason that I can find every other volume for a comparatively reasonable price, but volume three is out of print and costs and arm and a leg used?  Is it printed on solid gold paper?  Does Gil dorktastically declare his love?  Is there a secret code embedded that reveals government secrets?  Is there smut?  What what what?

*do not spoil*

World, don't make me read it online!  I hate reading online when I can read in print!  Aside from Claymore and Fullmetal Alchemist,  I only read manga scans as self defense against spoilers.  Actually, that applies to them now, too.  (And I can't even keep up with scans half the time, anyway.)

(But really, is there any specific reason for this?)

The Foglios' website has copies for $20. Maybe it's just one of those problems Amazon has when they deal with self-or-small-publishers?

Possibly because Studio Foglio is a tiny, self-publishing operation? Phil and Kaja have been independently publishing their comics for decades; it is their living, they are professionals, and they get by on it, but they're still quite itty-bitty, working from their own home, and without much resource or clout. I imagine they have corresponding distribution issues that don't pop up for ginormous publishers with access to ginormous distribution networks.

They're perfectly happy when people buy their books from a store or Amazon or something, because it helps to create a market, but it's always totally worth checking their own website, as [livejournal.com profile] snarp did, to see if you can order something from them that can't be gotten elsewhere (I've done it--sometimes, they could sell me "out of print" books from their own stock). And if the Foglios themselves no longer have copies of the books on hand to sell, it's worth dropping them a line to let them know you're interested; I know they have gone and had more copies of something printed, because they knew there was enough of a demand to make it monetarily worth their while to print a new run.

SPOILER: Gil does everything dorktastically. It's why we love him more than peanuts.

I automatically apply "dorktastically" to everything he does in my head. Because it's true. (Yeah, I prefer to buy through stores because it does help with numbers and such, but...)
