1.  Rightstuf is finally having a sale on Del Rey products. 33% off all manga.  Must read My Heavenly Hockey Club before it ends.

2.  They also have tons of anime up to 95% off, resulting in $4-$7 discs.  I've ordered Le Chevalier d'Eon, and may yet order Speed Grapher before it ends.

3.  Deep Discount is having their codeword sale where you take 25% off their regular prices.  I'll be getting season 3 of Avatar (I've tried to remain spoiler free, but it hasn't worked well.) and maybe something else.  The codeword is "supersale".

The Rightstuf sales end 11/23, the Deep Discount one on 11/23.

(Meanwhile, I'm watching the Farscape episode where they're taking people's eyes out and then putting them back in.  Good episode, but eeeeewwww.  I'm the girl who cannot watch the scene in The Mummy where they're about to take Imhotep's eyes out even though I've seen it at least a dozen times and know perfectly well that we don't see it happen.)

Farscape did love its "yikes!" effect.

I hate you all Americans and your places to order animanga. Wait, no, I don't, we actually get more manga, earlier on average.

Hope I haven't spoiled you on Avatar, I don't think I've been very careful :(

Hmm...I actually don't remember you saying much on Avatar. Really, it's more like the Harry Potter books where everyone assumes everyone knew what happened 3 days later. A few weeks after it finished airing, people stopped worrying about spoilers. Fair enough, and they shouldn't have to control what they say just because I don't always get to things quickly, but it's one of those things that are so big that it just always gets brought up with the assumption that if you haven't watched it, fandom osmosis has filled you in. (And I worry far less about TV show spoilers than I do about book/manga spoilers, though I still avoid them.)

Yes, I know how it works :) And sometimes even though you don't want to spoil, you kinda forget about it because you get sidetracked in a comment thread or a meme. I'm rather spoilerphobic myself, so don't hesitate if I ever spoil you by mistake, I'll understand the feeling and will be more careful ^^

I'm wondering regarding "Le Chevalier d'Eon." It seems dark and bloody to me, is it?

No clue! I've heard interesting things about it, though.

The anime is depressing and gloomy in spots and there's plenty of characters who end up dead, but I wouldn't call it extremely grim or gory. The manga is much, much different in terms of plot/blood/craziness.

I liked it for the atmosphere and the "stick history in blender!" approach. (Okay, and I couldn't let anything where the main male protagonist transforms into a girl to fight evil go by unwatched.) It's pretty slow-paced, though, especially during the second arc, and the animation is kind of "eh" in spots.

How's the manga? I've heard very mixed reviews on that.

The manga is, um, pretty darn insane. It is fairly bloody, and often incoherent. I almost want to say it approaches Kaori Yuki levels of what-the-hell, except it doesn't really have KY's...charm? Confidence? Ability to juggle nonsensical plots? This is made even weirder by the fact that all the historical notes in each volume are very detailed and thorough.

The art isn't bad (I like it a lot, actually) but this not a series to read if you have trouble parsing lots of action. I think the first volume was something like 85% action scenes.

For me it's fun, like a hybrid of a supernatural-action thriller and a period film--but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's good. The anime may have zombie dogs and a talking skull, but it at least gives you a little breathing room between all the craziness.

Thanks for the info :) I've seen the manga and was wondering if the anime was anything like that.

I recommend Speed Grapher if you haven't seen it. It's got an engaging story and the animation is beautiful.

Le Chevalier d'Eon is really good too. I haven't seen all of it, but I'm up to vol 4.

I think it depends on whether or not they have all of it when I order Del Rey stuff.

Hrm. I may need to do some catching up on volumes of Tsubasa and xxxHolic.

From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
Yeah. I was looking through the catalogue and realized that they're probably the only publisher where I mangage to stay mostly caught up with purchases and releases. They seem to have slowed Tsubasa and xxxHolic releases, though.

I never got past vol. 8 of Tusbasa and only have the xxxHolic omnibus so I'm way behind.

Which, IMO, is before either one actually gets good.

Oh, agreed. That's part of why I really need to catch up.

Noien was decent, but I didn't like it as much as I expected to.

Hmm, maybe... I'm a bit of an animation fan so I like the movement in it though. I also like the motif of the different interpretations of the same characters.

Was there something that bugged you about it?

Date: 2008-11-21 05:48 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
Nope, nothing that bugged me, and I was interested in it for the alternate versions bit. It just never quite took off for mme the way i expected it to.

Is that the Nebari mind-cleanse? That's a good episode, although I didn't quite agree with Crichton's interpretation to act like a stoned surfer.

When I had my laser surgery, the numbing drops didn't quite take. I described it as going through a Nebari mind-cleanse.

From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
Err...I'm dismissing a lot of less-than-charming (to me) behavior on Crichton's part this season to his having a guest in his head. But yeah, that's the right ep.

....You're already up to Clockwork Nebari? o.O

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT WATCH THE NEXT EPISODE. At least not without watching the Liars, Guns and Money trilogy.

It's the one set of discs they screwed up on, putting two non-contiguous episodes after each other.

Though, to be fair, LGM works way better as a disc on its own.

...

For some reason, I didn't realize there was another episode on the disc. *notes*

Hah. It might not be, depending on which version you've got. But I thought I'd warn you, because I know people who did and were confused (not to mention spoiled).

Spoilers are the enemy of Megankind.

I shall check when I get home. Or maybe that was the first episode on that disc. I've been watching the season in bits and pieces because Netflix is a slowpoke, so I start forgetting these things. (Ok, not really, but Netflix does not cater to my binge sensibilities and so does not send me entire seasons at once.)
