Ok series, I thought you were very devoted to avoiding Shoujo Tropes That Annoy Megan Land, what happened? At least you wrapped that up quickly, and had a fun twist on the usual take on it.

Yoh’s ex-girlfriend coming back was obviously going to happen sooner or later, I just didn’t want it to. Or if it did, I at least didn’t want her to want to get back together with him. At least there were no second thoughts or dithering on his part.

Haruna ending up helping Makoto with the nameless ex-boyfriend was also pretty typical, and I wish she’d figured it out sooner, but at least it was funny.

But we did have Yoh walking into beams, and Haruna being convinced that there was something deeply wrong with the universe because Yoh wasn’t rescuing her.

I did like, though, that the end result of all this was Yoh being the first one to say “I love you,” and without being pushed into it or feeling like he had to. Usually when this happens, the girl blurts it out while he’s angsting or dithering, or he feels pressured into saying it.

Though given how she reacted to being kissed, I’m not sure it was a wise move.
 
And now I’m all caught up with the US releases again. Woes!

I loved those last three pages. I think I read them over several times. :)

And yeah, romantic rival plots bug me, but I liked that we actually got to see Yoh's perspective and how upset he was at her contacting him. I liked his firmness in dealing with her, and that following Haruna's advice left him at peace with his past.

It was a romantic rival plot with a point, kinda. :)

Also, I liked the Haruna/Makoto stuff for a somewhat shallow reason—Haruna looked all manly and cool next to her!

Yeah, it was more irritation with the fact that we were having the plotline in the first place than the actual plotline.

And we already know that Haruna is a shoujo hero.
