I like the original character designs in this volume. That Gin and Kagura originally started out Hijikata and Okita explains a lot.

I think Sorachi tried for an ongoing storyline in this volume. That, or actual consecutive storylines.

Otsu is a ring fighter? Okita temporarily takes in orphans? I’m not sure which is more concerning. Though I’m glad we learned quickly that Okita Does Not Approve of illegal death matches. I’m not sure why Gin even pretended he wasn’t going to look into it, though.

The Shinsengumi’s protectiveness towards Kondo continues to be very endearing. Though I’m surprised Okita and Hijikata weren’t tailing Kondo all day. But why was Sa-chan even in the car with Kondo and his boss who thought everyone was an assassin? Random inclusion for laughs. Actually, is there any other reason anyone shows up?

The cockroach chapter may have been the best part of the volume. “The strongest being in the universe is afraid of a cockroach” indeed. At least when said being is a 14-year-old girl and the cockroach is bigger than most men.

Gin also got silky, styled hair in this volume. I found that to be slightly traumatizing.

Heya; it's been a while! The hair looks so very, very wrong on him. He's just not the same curmodgeonly Gin with flat hair! And looking at original character designs is always both interesting and slightly weirdness-inducing. The path not taken, indeed. I'm glad you're enjoying this series; I had a feeling you would. Are you tempted to try the anime version as well?

Scary icon courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] marice_r, I do believe, uh-huh :-). And look, lovely snowy Yuya icon. Purty!
Gintama is firmly on my list of anime to try soonish; I really want to hear who they've got as the seiyuu. I must also try the Skip Beat anime, I think. BTW, I have you to thank for my new Skip Beat addiction; I tried the first few volumes and was hooked. She has grudge demons! He has a gentlemanly smile that scares her spitless! Awesome stuff :-).

Skip-Beat is my favorite currently-running shoujo.
