Samurai Deeper Kyo writeups are a bit odd for me at this point, because I’ve read the rest in a combination of raws + translations, scans, and summaries and start getting confused as to what has and hasn’t been revealed yet, and half my thoughts are about things that are being built up to.

This volume? Is the most shounen fun I’ve had in ages. The Yuan/Hotaru fight was a blast. And, frankly, what I’d hoped the Kyo/Yukimura fight would be. (Listen, when a fight is built up off and on for over twenty volumes and then ends up the most boring and generic fight in the whole series for me and it takes me multiple tries to get past it, I reverse the right to harp on it.)

Sadly, though, between the fun of the fight and the chibi!angry!looks-like-a-mini-Shinrei-with-pigtails!Hotaru, I fear I have little comprehensible to say. (So cute! So cute!) And Yuan’s siblings glomping Shinrei! Poor Shinrei. He really does ask for it, though. You just know that he walks into a room of Mibu kidlets and they attack him for candy and declare him their horsey..

But! We finally actually get to properly meet Sakuya. I’m pretty sure I’ve said this before, but the “Yuya is like Sakuya” thing has always confused me. They don’t look anything alike, and what little we’ve seen of Sakuya doesn’t indicate that their personalities are alike. I think, though, that both tend to make people feel comfortable and accepted, and that that’s where the comparison largely comes from.

Also, I want Yuya’s pheromones. That girl is gifted when it comes to always having someone around to catch her. Though I’d rather they took out the ingredient that results in regular boob grabbage. And I’m glad to see that she can still Kyoshiro cower in fear. Though, Kyoshiro, you should be careful with the hugging thing. It tends to result in Kyo’s face doing the “cannot process brain not functioning try to kill something to compensate” reaction. He already wants to get his preciouses back from you as it is. He has plans for both.

Yuan wasn’t sticking his tongue out all the time in this volume. I’m very grateful for that.

Yeah, I'm getting to the point where it's gotten all jumbled in my head - especially because I'm now lagging behind on the English releases. I mean, I think it was nearly three years ago that I started reading the Japanese originals, and the series finished in Japan mid-2006, if I recall correctly. And we've just been drip-fed the English versions since then. No wonder the brains become confuzzled! You're right, the Hotaru-Yuan fight here is an extremely gripping one. And now the red eyes really begin to show up left right and centre, which I've always found rather cool. I think I was more puzzled by the Yuya-Sakuya comparisons in the anime version, because at least in this Sakuya has 1) eyes, and 2) girlish mannerisms ;-).

The anime also doesn't show Yuya's caring side as much, or how she affects people, and Sakuya is very different there.
