Hmm…this volume is when we’re still in the gothloli-bondage-fetish-forbidden-touching phase. My brain doesn’t really work well in these conditions. I mean, let’s face it, the entire premise of this arc is that Sakura is gothloli-ed out and is playing chess with mafia!Eagle, with real!Syaoran, Kurogane, and Fai as her chess pieces. Which are chained to her. Not even Kaori Yuki can pull off that level of gothic shoujo fanservice. But then, there’s a degree of understated subtlety to it.
And then you have the whole bit with real!Syaoran pining for Sakura, who is rejecting him both because he isn’t the Syaoran she wants, and to protect him. And then the silent arm grabbing and Sakura finally calling him by name. I remain torn between flailing and “No! You are not the Syaoran she wants! You need your own Sakura!”
I still find mafia!Eagle much more entertaining than MKR!Eagle. I can also now appreciate Eagle controlling the Automata based on MKR!Hikaru. Lantis’s angsty stares at the arena also make more sense now.
I still remain fascinated with the fact that Sakura’s luck was taken by Yuuko, especially with the importance of bad luck in xxxHolic. And I will never grow tired of Kurogane effectively saying that Fai is a stupidhead for hiding his angst and pretending everything is ok.
I’m glad this isn’t my first time seeing Fai stab Sakura and her body and soul go to different worlds. It’s hard to think straight after reading that the first time.
