By page 2, we have this quote: “The embryo of the cursed bloodline rises to the heavens dripping blood and flapping its black wings.” It seems to be referring to Cain’s birth.
Having seen pictures, I was pretty much spoiled for Ansel Allen’s real ID as soon as he showed up. As I understand thing, Jizabel Disraeli is pretty much the main villain of the series. In one of her sidebars, Kaori Yuki mentions that she doesn’t like men with long hair. This confuses me, given how many of them there are in Angel Sanctuary. So much lovely hair pr0n there…
This volume has Cain, Mary Weather, Riff, and Dr. Ansel Allen-who-is-real-Jizabel Disraeli-and-wants-to-destroy-Cain going off to the country because Cain is being poisoned. We’re supposed to suspect Riff, but we know better. So does Cain. Sadly, they didn’t let Mary in on it. I agree with her that that was mean.
Then again, she did make Cain agree to go to the countryside and live next door to the castle rumored to have vampires living there, and then conspire to have them move in. I do love Mary, though I worry about what’s going on in her head at times. I also suspect Cain and Riff’s stack of boxes at the end were bribes to buy forgiveness.
Meanwhile: Incestuous vampire siblings! Cain was in love with his sister who he thought was his cousin! Jizabel Disraeli hates Cain because he was raised by Cain’s father who only ever thinks about Cain! Can says he can’t love any woman who isn’t related to him by blood!* It’s like Angel Sanctuary all over again! But there is to be no Cain/Mary, ok?
Oh yes, and vampire girl created a split personality to forget being raped by her stepfather, creating a living, breathing madonna/whore complex, and Jizabel Disraeli wants to put Cain’s eyes in a glass jar.
Fun times.
This also has Kaori Yuki’s first published work, about a girl who is reincarnated as the son of the teacher she was in love with and her classmate. Kinda a dull story, but it’s nice to know she started early.
*Actually, you have to feel for Mary, there, as she realizes that it’s really the only reason he loves her.
