Godchild Vol 8 (end)

good!Riff battling evil!Riff and winning! Riff is a clone-doll-zombie-thingie!
Cassian returning just in time for Disraeli to die in his arms. (Wait, didn’t I predict that one? I’m not sure I’m comfortable with being able to predict Kaori Yuki drama!) Disraeli cutting own throat so that Riff will have an extra day to save Cain!
Human skulls inside talismans! Human skulls with glowing, bleeding eyes!
Riff on how he can find Cain: “I would assimilate myself with your essence. Then I would simply follow the wind onto the trails, and into the shady glades. That air…always had a feeling of sadness, as if you were crying…which would make me quicken my steps…you see? And there you were.”
But they totally aren’t an item.
Cain forever wrapped in Riff’s skeletal embrace with a smile on his face! Or maybe he’s just resting! Kaori Yuki doesn’t seem very sure on that front.
Cain poisons Alexis with cantalera, which he identifies as a Borgia poison, meaning it’s another translation of the poison that Cantarella gets it’s name from, resulting in a bizarre Gothic Shoujo Crack crossover. Which is fitrting, as Cantarella is what got me started on the Gothic Shoujo Crack…
I think Crehador briefly switched sides or was always Alexis’s spy or some such, but he was on Cain’s side again by the end, so all was well. He is also apparently the gentlemanly young man in Mary Weather’s dream and who was hanging around her. Can I just assume that, in the 10~ years between the climax and the end, he met some nice woman who could keep him in line and didn’t die?
Have I mentioned that Delilah’s master plan to take over the world or some such involved brainwashed hordes with human baby skull talismans in London?
And I am amused at Kaori Yuki’s carefully pointing out all the ways that Cain maybe isn’t really dead in the afterword. She really can’t have a purely tragic ending, can she? As such things go, it’s probably a miracle that even Riff died. (Not that I want Riff dead or any such, but, you know…)
And of course Mary Weather isn’t really Cain’s sister. There were no incesty things going on. That should have been the biggest clue!
Things I could have done without:
1) The last minute “The evil mother is the real villain!” reveal, though it wasn’t hard to figure out in advance.
2) The reminder that Oscar is still hung up on Cain. Largely because it makes it look like Oscar only married Mary Weather when she grew up because of Cain, not because he loved her.
Hmm…and now I have read everything of Kaori Yuki’s that’s been licensed. In about a six month period. Viz (or whoever) needs to license more now!
Hmm…after I finish X/1999, I think I’ll need to cleanse my brain with some shoujo fluff and/or shounen.

Date: 2008-12-27 01:54 am (UTC)Though there is the bonus of Mary Weather now running the Hargreaves family.
Though I admit, I was slightly weirded out by the chapter page of naked Cain leaning back against the chair evil!Riff was lounging in with his diabolocal smile. (Though the Cain/Crehador page cracked me up, as Cain looks like he's looking for Riff, and Crehador's face is a bit "WTF am I doing here?" Which kinda fits with his overall involvement...)
