High School Debut Vol 7

Am I the only one who can’t stop staring at this cover? For those who aren’t sure what cover this is, it features Asami dressed as a she-devil and apparently about to drag Haruna-who is dressed as a catgirl-off to be molested. In the background, Fumi is freaking out and wearing a skull ring, and Yoh is looking disnterested in what may or may not be a pimp outfit. I DO NOT KNOW!!!

I adored the first chapter of this volume, with the take on the shoujo trope of the girl having to nurse the sick guy. Asa was totally setting them up! She reads shoujo too! And then worried that Haruna will molest Yoh while he’s unconscious! She definitely reads shoujo!

I’m ignoring the “girl can’t cook” bit. I allow it only because only Haruna was worried about it. Yoh didn’t care if she could cook or not. And Haruna proves once again that she imprinted on the wrong gender in all of her shoujo reading with the bending over the sick significant other while they’re in bed. And then employing a face mask to keep the reverse from happening when it gets her sick.

I was slightly less fond of the bulk of the volume, which was Asa trying to make Fumi jealous. It lasted too long. I’m glad that the baseball nemesis is hanging around, though, and I liked Fumi’s insane side.

And then Yoh kisses Haruna, causing her to pass out. Don’t worry, Yoh, I’m sure you’ll eventually get her to where she reacts to kisses like a normal human being. Then you’ll have to do the same with sex. You might be able to try for babies when you’re about 40.

The last bit with the new students seems to be setup for future events, especially with the Three Shades of Shoujo Heroes (Silent And Withdrawn, Cocky Playboy, and Energetic And Brash) taking notice of Haruna. But I loved how this was all new to Yoh, since he scared girls off before Haruna. Who does not get scared off. Unless you kiss her. And whose response to the potential of getting angsty and nervous over girls liking her boyfriend is to resolve to muscle up so she’ll be the best girl. Did I mention yet how she imprinted on the wrong characters in her shoujo reading? She’s lucky Yoh doesn’t really mind being the damsel most of the time.

Asa bores me senseless most of the time, but Yoh and Haruna are one of my favourite manga couples ever. ♥

...and I'm glad you reminded me, I'm only up to volume 4 of my actual-physical-I-paid-money-for-this collecting of the manga. I always forget what I've bought when I read the scans as well!

I just can't help but like Asa. I think it's because she-and her issues-are more "teenaged little sister" than most manga will go.

I always make sure I get the licensed editions of the few titles I read in scans as soon as they come out.

My favourite instance of this is Haruna being confronted by a mob of angry Yoh fangirls (a classic shoujo manga cliche), and rather than being saved by her love interest or running away, she...beats the crap out of them. WIN.

Yes, that was great. That was...vol 4? 5? And Yoh is always so worried and acting like the shoujo hero and rushing to the rescue...and there's no need.
