So, is all of Forsyte Saga about this guy who dumped his wife and daughter for the governess, and has dumped the governess and is proposing to another chick?

Because...uhm...I kinda really like BBC period productions and i've heard good things about this, but I find this guy incredibly boring.  On top of hating him on principle.  (You take the woman you just had sex with in with you when you tell your wife that you're dumping her?  Die now.)

ETA:  Ok, wait, maybe the guy who ditched his wife for the governess isn't the extremely hateful guy.  Which would make the hateful guy's behavior towards the nice young girl who is the daughter of the guy who dumped his wife a bit less horrible.  This is what happens when you're kinda bored by something...

Well, so long as you're sure to shout "NO COMEUPPANCE!"

Nope!
There are many many more players in this game.
There will be whole episodes where they're not even mentioned. I watched it two years ago so things are fuzzy beyond fuzzy. I remember Soames and the woman who marries him but not for love and the man who she falls in love with who does crazy things for her and the children of guy who dumped his wife and their aunts and uncles and ... then things get even more complicated?
Need further proof that there are unnumbered complexities ahead? Check out the imdb and see the cast list - it's massive.

It's like the original costume drama soap opera. Apparently. The 60s version is the entire reason Masterpiece Theater exists.

This is the more recent one with Ioan Griffud (or however you spell it). I actually approve of Soames's wife cheating on him with a better person. (It helps that she was pretty much pressured into it.) Do horrible things happen to Soames? It could be incentive to keep watching!

My concurrent (and persistent) Horatio Hornblower* love means I was quite happy to see Ioan in Saga!
Soames relationship with her is a freakish scary thing, yes. Most uncool.
I'd love to say yes, that he gets some karma payback, but it's other much less deserving people who suffer.

*I see you don't have a Horatio Hornblower tag - It's in the theoretical to-be-watched stack then, yes? Because HH is rather yay.

I watched it in college before I was able to extensively blog everything, much less obsessively tag. The HH love, though, is the main thing that got me through as much of BSG as I did.

Hurrah! \o/

Seriously, I wish so much that livejournal belonged to Google too, like Blogger. It would be so handy to have an easy-as-pie way to search entries for mentions of stuff.

I hated it and barely made it through part one. Damian Lewis did such a great job of being hateful that I couldn't bear to watch any more than that.

He is badmouthing his daughter, who he abandoned, to his wife, and has forbidden his wife to spend any time with her! I want to watch to see him die!

I don't...I can't even tell if she even knows he's her father.

Horrible man. Just horrible. And I didn't even get that far. I only made it to the part where they have miserable, joyless sex and then she goes into the bathroom and douches on the sly in an attempt not to get knocked up with his reptilian spawn. Couldn't take any more after that.

Well, his first kid has turned out pretty sweet, so his spawn isn't reptilian as long as his partner has a soul. Sadly, Sweet Daughter's fiance is now making eyes at the wife. i disapprove of this because he and Sweet Daughter are cute and if he hurts her I'll have to hate him a bit, and he's played by Horatio Hornblower.

Ah yes, the "daughter" is actually his niece. So... still awful, but in a different way.

YES!

Still a horrible man! And reduces the chances of his spawn not being reptilian demons.

Yeah the point of him separating his wife (Irene) from his niece (June) was less about June (he just looks down on her and treats her as crappily as he does everyone else) and more about him being posessive of Irene and not wanting her to have any friends. Because like, Irene really enjoyed being with June, but her husband was like "ZOMG she's a bad influence!" and tried to break them apart. BECAUSE HE IS AWFUL LIKE THAT. >:(

The Forsyte Saga was the first thing I saw Damian Lewis in, and I was like "He's hot! Oh... but his character is so horrid... yet he's still hot..." I'm so glad he's in Life now, and playing a good guy so I don't have to be conflicted.

I first encountered him in Band of Brothers and had seen him in several other things by the time I tried to watch The Forsyte Saga, so the utterly horrid Soames was quite the shock. More proof of his acting talent, I suppose.

So, is all of Forsyte Saga about this guy who dumped his wife and daughter for the governess, and has dumped the governess and is proposing to another chick?

Wait... what? I think you're confusing Soames and Jolyon. Jolyon is the one who dumped his wife and daughter to run away with his governess, who he lives with for some time and has kids with and eventually marries once his first wife dies. Soames is the red-haired guy who is like, the devil incarnate and is so horrible to his wife that she cheats on his with the hot architect guy.

As for the series, it's more generally about the whole family, although it does tend to focus on Soames's life getting more and more miserable, entirely due to his own awfulness.

Yeah. I think that, between Jolyon getting the beard and the time jump, I just got confused.

Soames wife didn't really seem to want to marry him in the first place.

She married him because she was destitute and was also sort of forced into it by her bitchy stepmother.

Yup. And Young Jolyen killed my slowly growing good will going going "The fiance of my poor daughter who I abandoned a decade ago appears to be cheating on her? Big whoop!"

Uhm...I kinda feel for his dad and Soames's mother.

The only thing I remember about The Forsyte Saga is that it taught me about marital rape.

And I think there was lots of family drama drawn out over at least two generations. Eh, I'm not really sure it's worth watching.

Right now, I kind of want to see everyone but June 9the daughter) her grandfather, and Soames's mother suffer horribly.

What I mainly know about the Forsyte Saga is that the writer Anna Quindlin absolutely adored it as a young reader, and was painfully stunned when she went to college and made the mistake of saying so in an English class, prompting her asshole professor to pound on his desk and scornfully shout, "Galsworthy."

Or something like that. Liberal arts education has really changed, man. I've had plenty of professors who were willing to share some measure of their personal feelings on various cultural phenomena, but none who tried to shame me for liking a book they didn't.
