Today, I made Chex Mix for the first time.  For anyone who has only ever had store bought Chex Mix, you're missing out.

Meanwhile, the [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets  secret that I was linked to last weekend, regarding whether or not slash can be feminist, was posted today as #117.  As it's F!S, it isn't worded in the best way possible (though the commentors immediately going "not feminist=misogynistic seem to really be stretching, particularly given the first statement in the secret), but there are interesting points in it.  Particularly the bit about encouraging canons you think treat women badly or that you think have bad female characters instead of finding canons where you think the female characters are treated better if it's a factor for you.  Then again, I'm the one who will likely never again touch Naruto or Stargate: Atlantis because I can't stand how they treat the female characters, despite both having other factors I like.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that most secrets posted there regarding slash or feminism or liking/not liking female characters are posted to see the wank at this point.

In othernews, has anyone read the manhwa Love or Money?  (Specifically, is this one where the series is still in print, and that Tokyopop didn't drop midway through?)  As can happen, I ended up talking about shoujo (specifically, I was asked if I knew of any good romantic shoujo) at Hastings when I went into town earlier, and ended up having the first volume in my hand.  I gave her High School Debut and we both like W Juliet, so it all works out.

And now, despite being roughly 2 weeks behind on blogging things I've read, I shall spend the rest of the day reading and betaing fics.

I've read the first four volumes of Love or Money. I'm not sure how many Tokyopop published, but I'm fairly sure they're out of print. I found them at a flea market that is always full of manga that has gone out of print (though that doesn't mean they're out of print for sure, it just makes it strongly appear that way). I thought it was pretty cute.

Chex Mix makes me nostalgic. Whenever my family would visit my grandmother in Pennsylvania, we would always arrive to freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and homemade Chex Mix.

EXACTLY! Though in my case, it was my mother making the Chex Mix.

I am *this close* to running to store to get the ingredients.

Now I must know about this home-made Chex Mix. Is there like a recipe for it or something? xD

I just try and stay farrrrr away from f!s nowadays. At one point, I read a crap ton of it for days, maybe weeks straight, but... yeah, just... the wank. xD Scary.

I can't break myself of the habit. Though I usually avoid the comments altogether unless i'm curious about the fallout of a secret.

I THINK you can actually get the recipe on the side of a lot of chex mix boxes.

That's how I used to be... I think I was able to break my habit easily because I only frequented for a few months maybe. Then I just steadily stopped reading them.

Oh, I'll check that out next time I'm at the grocery store.

They do usually have the recipe on the cereal boxes, but if you were to perhaps want to economize and maximize your snack-mix-dollar by buying generics, the recipe is also online (http://www.chex.com/Recipes/RecipeView.aspx?RecipeId=6709&CategoryId=343).

Really, you can almost think of that more as a guideline than a recipe that must be strictly followed -- if you particularly like/dislike some of the add-ins like pretzels or peanuts, it's no problem to leave out some ingredients or add more of your favorites. You can also use a larger amount of the butter-and-seasoning mixture if you want a more intense flavor -- and generic Chex-type cereals work perfectly well, or pretty much anything unsweetened of a similar size and texture -- I often substitute Crispix for the Rice Chex and Corn Chex...

I may or may not have replaced the mixed nuts with goldfish...

I have occasionally, in the throes of simultaneous massive cravings and unwillingness to make an unplanned grocery trip for missing ingredients, made all-Chex Chex Mix.

(The "pour Chex Mix seasoned butter mixture over popcorn" experiment was a dreadful failure, OTOH: no matter how tasty the seasonings, there's just something wrong about soggy popcorn.)

Well, I think the Chex Mix seasoning isn't quite as good in general until it's cooked in.

Thank you. XD Oh good, I'm not a huge fan of pretzels. I'd probably replace them with more peanuts.

Oooh yes, swapping pretzels for peanuts can totally work. Or some different kind of nut, if you prefer cashews or whatever. Or mixed nuts, or bagel chips, or tiny breadsticks, or Goldfish, or oyster crackers, or... Basically, anything that doesn't go soggy and mushy enough to fall apart when drizzled with the butter-and-seasonings mix can work just fine. If in doubt, test-dunk a piece of whatever snacky add-in you're considering; if it doesn't go mushy instantly, it's usable. :)

I'm just now finding f!s and catching up on old entries. Fortunately for me, I'm unfamiliar with about 95 percent of the source material posted, and the feminist screeds, I've had the same fights in the POTC fandom for the last 3 years already, enough to know when to keep my mouth shut and when to say "hey, wait ..." LOL

I keep thinking that half the reason I still follow f!s is that there will eventually be a secret that leads to my discovering a new fandom love. It hasn't happened yet.

There's such a thing as store-bought chex mix? o.o

...dangit, now I want to make MUDDY BUDDIES

MUDDY BUDDIES!!! I thought about making them, too, but didn't want the stern "you used up all my cereal" look.

Understandable that you'd want to avoid that *nods*

Because I've been avoiding my essay like woah, I've been thinking about your post for a bit.

I wonder a bit about how often people who hate female characters in their fandom (say, the anti-Gwen folks in Torchwood, or the anti-Ginny folks in HP, or whatever) aren't told to just leave instead of spending so much time writing how much they hate certain characters.

Maybe they are, I suppose, but it seems there's a lot more "get your feminism out of my fandom" than there is "get your woman-hating out of my fandom". {Which isn't to say that hating certain female characters = woman hating.)

Yeah. For all that I hear rage about "feminazis" and "famdon feminists," they aren't what I see much of outside of parts of my flist. Most that I see is slash/disliking female characters, or careful explanations of why they don't hate female characters, female characters just aren't as good.

Forgive my ignorance, but Chex Mix is what?

Somewhere in the comments is the recipe. But its mostly a seasoned snack mix with chex cereal, pretzels, and nuts, though you can mix some things up.

Ahhh! I shall have to trawl through the comments to find the recipe and give it a whirl :D

Sounds a little like scroggin
