Netflix just told me that they’re shipping series 2 to me this week, which made me realize that I forgot to post on these episodes after I watched them.

Despite all the recs, this probably did more to convince me to check out Life than anything else, simply because Damian Lewis made me simultaneously see Soames as a repulsive human being and sympathize with his need for a son. Then again, I’ve had classes on Victorian and 19th century British Literature and have been reading Regency and Victorian set romance novels for over half my life, so the “need for a son to carry on the name” in fiction set then is fairly strongly imprinted on me. And I liked that he seemed able to be proud to have a daughter at the end.

I was glad that Winifred finally put her foot down and said she was going to have what she wanted, I just wish that what she wanted was a little more worthy of her.

[livejournal.com profile] dangermousietells me that this version of Fortsyte Saga is very miscast. I haven’t read the books and she has, so I’ll take her word for it, as she’s familiar with the original versions and I’m not, but I do have to say that this is pretty much universally excellently acted.

I have no idea what the second series is about as I just moved it to close to the top of the queue after finishing this, but I predict that it will be about the forbidden love between Jolyon’s son and Soames’s daughter. Whatever the plot is, I hope it has room for June.

Despite the abundance of unlikable characters, this was pretty engrossing, and I find myself curious about the books.  Does anyone have opinions about the longer 60s version?

You are correct! IIRC, June gets some decent screentime in this one, complete with a cute Roaring 20s makeover.

Alas I know nothing about the books or the older series, though the older series was well-regarded in its time.

It is the most obvious assumption from the end! Val and Holly already set a precedent there.
