not the best anime season so far
Oct. 11th, 2015 08:15 amI tried out both The Asterisk War and Chivalry of a Failed Knight and...I mean, I guess they're both ok for fanservice-y "Magic School with swords and duels" shows. They're so similar that they almost seem to based off the same work. The leads of both shows meet in the same way, and the first episodes have almost identical plot structures and the heroines have almost identical personalities and revealed backstories. Chivalry was better than Asterisk, IMO, but I doubt I'll watch more of either unless I hear something about them that interests me.
I've heard good things about One Punch Man, about a superhero who is so strong that he ends every fight with a single punch, making being a superhero actually fairly boring. Sadly, I, too, was bored. I might watch a couple more episodes to see if it works better for me since I do know people who like it.
Lance N Masques is the last of the new series that I checked out and it's...odd. The main character, Yotaro, is a knight who doesn't like being a knight, but had being the stereotypical idea of a chivalric knight drilled into him so much that he frequently displays "White Knight Syndrome" and dashes in the direction of anything resembling a damsel in distress and spouts flowery prose and kisses hands. He rescues a little girl named Makio from falling and, since he was wearing a mask at the time, she dubs him "Knight Lancer," designating Yotaro (who she doesn't know was her savior) something of a lovable loser. On learning that Makio lives alone, he takes her under his wing. Later they're joined by Alice, Yotaro's squire, Shirohime, who is either a girl who turns into a horse or a horse who turns into a girl (not sure which) and Yoriko, the strict maid who is responsible for Yotaro's White Knight Syndrome. The art is incredibly cutesy and it...the series is just odd. But entertaining enough that I'll watch more.
For series returning for their second seasons:
The first episode of K: Return of Kings was rushed and horribly disjointed and the treatment of Seri surpassed fanservice and moved on to just being gross, to the point where I almost reconsidered watching more. The second episode was way better, and more in line with the better episodes of season 1. I'm not really interested in the Green clan plot yet, but I do mostly like what's going on with the Silver, Blue and Red clans. Though, are Kuroh and Neko just...permanently mooching off of Kukuri or something? I'm not sure how they're managing to live on the island otherwise, since they aren't students.
Unsurprisingly Noragami Aragato is my favorite of the lot, picking up pretty smoothly from where the first season ended. I'm really enjoying the focus on Bishamon and her Regalia so far this season, and am very much okay with the blatant emotional manipulation involved in the emphasis on the probability that Hiyori won't remember the gods and their Regalia when she's older. Not sure about this season's villain yet.
