anime: Red Data Girl
Oct. 20th, 2013 09:11 pm12 episode shoujo horror/romance series from earlier this year, based on light novels by Noriko Ogiwara (Dragon Sword and Wind Child).
Suzuhara Izumiko is a shy 15-year-old who was raised in a shrine, but wants to go to school in the city, so her guardian decides she should go to school with his son, Sagara Miyuki, who he orders to act as her manservant. Izumiko's hair has never been cut pre-series and electronics break down when she comes into contact with them. The reason for this is soon revealed to be that, like other women in her family, Izumiko is the avatar of a goddess simply known as "Himegami," and is the goddess's final avatar, and Miyuki (who is considerably less than pleased about this development) is supposed to protect her from any supernatural forces that come after her. Which, of course, happens frequently. They're also joined by a set of triplets, Mayura, Manatsu and Masumi, two of whom are possibly incestuous, and one of whom is a ghost who sometimes crossdresses because life on the otherside can be dull. (Mayuri is female, Manatsu and Masuda are male.)
Izumiko is a bit too on the passive and timid side for me at first, and Miyuki definitely too much on the "mean shoujo jerk" side of things, but their respective upbringings and situations make their starting points pretty understandable, and they both improve quickly, and Izumiko becomes a more active participant in things pretty quickly. Gotta say, though, that while I enjoyed the two and their relationship a good bit overall, I found the co-dependent and possibly destructive nature of the triplets' relationship more interesting for the series as a whole. The imagery, both fantasy and horror, is frequently stunning (I am especially fond of the freaky disembodied hands) and I found the mythology very interesting, though I don't think the series was long enough to fully flesh that out and do everything else it wanted to with the characters. (Actually, I feel like the writers were writing a 13 episode series and suddenly found out they were writing as 12 episode series. Also, I feel that if your OP features smooching, you should probably follow up on it at some point in your show. I'm just saying.)
I will watch a sequel if one is made.
