manga: Please Save My Earth Vol 1-2
Sep. 12th, 2009 02:33 amThis manga opens with a scene of dinosaurs staring wistfully into space, and then flying off in their spaceships just as volcanoes are about to erupt. This, sadly, appears to have nothing whatsoever to do with the plot, but is just a daydream Alice, the heroine, is having. Alice just moved to Tokyo from Hokkaido, has no friends, is terrorized by her eight year old neighbor, and talks to trees.
The Rin, the bratty neighbor kid, puts gum in her hair and all the girls in school swoop in to save her, Rin decides he’s in love with her, and she witnesses two boys in school in what seems to be a scene straight out of shounen ai. The boys, Jinpachi and Issei, have actually had the same dreams since junior high, and were discussing the dream. In their dreams, they’re aliens on the moon watching Earth. After learning about their dreams, Alice has a dream in which she’s Mokuren, and central character in Shinpachi and issei’s dreams, and the three realize that they’re reincarnated aliens, and that the other people from their dreams must also be reincarnated.
Incidentally, no one has found the moon base because the aliens are only inches tall, so the base is all teeny and such.
The story about the aliens and the moon looks to be awesomely epic and angsty and tragic and spiffy. The humans, unfortunately, are boring. Except for Rin, who, frankly, is too annoying to be bored. He may set the standard for annoying manga kids. He also seems to be a reincarnated alien 9as near as I can tell, most of the characters so far are) and to be set up as a potential love interest for Alice (who is sixteen or seventeen). I’m actually too annoyed at the prospect of someone that bratty and annoying as a potential love interest to be squicked by the idea of an eight year old as a love interest! I’m sure that will change, though.
Things do improve with the humans in the second half of volume 2, when more characters show up and a couple supporting characters get more fleshed out, but I still mostly just want angsty aliens.
