Of Swords and Parasols

I'm watching a movie that's using unflattering-to-her hair and makeup to try to convince me that Olivia de Haviland is plain and even unattractive.

It's about as successful as that one movie was at convincing me that Jessica Lange was "an ugly old hag."

The movies being The Heiress and Cousin Bette respectively.  (They're both pretty decent movies, but you know Hollywood, there are plenty of actresses who are less conventionally attractive and  even *shock* what are generally considered to be plain and/or unattractive who would no doubt appreciate some of these roles, if you want to give your makeup artists a break with that.)
