Just watched my Little Mermaid DVD, wonderful, of course. On the second disc, theres a 7 minute version of "The Little Matchgirl" thats silent except for instrumentals.
For those not familiar with it, it's one of Hans Christian Anderson's better(but lesser known) fairy tales. It's essentially a statement about poverty and homeless children.
Animation and music were both sad and tragic and beautiful.
And, naturally, I'm writing this while listening to them recount Anderson's version of the Little Mermaid, which is also beautiful and sad(and was among the most faithful adaptations in "Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre"
Actually, come to think of it...the Brother's Grimm fairy tales are dark, dark stories on the whole, while Anderson's tend to be sad and tragic. This isn't a hard and fast rule for either, of course but generally, it's the case.
And now that I'm all sad, I'm gonna find out if "It Started With A Kiss" is as happy as I've been assured...it's needed.
