Despite many changes to plot details, this series is surprisingly faithful to the feel of Alexander McCall Smith’s books, something that I wasn’t quite sure would be maintained despite my really liking the one episode I saw a while back. The episodes follow the various plotlines of the first few books about Precious Ramotswe, Botswana’s first and (initially) only lady detective, though not always in the same combination, and with a few I’m not familiar with thrown in.

One important plotline that’s resolved in the first book is extended through the season (I’ve been told it was cruelly cancelled, and more recently that it wasn’t. I’m hoping for the latter.) but in general I think that people who may have been put off by the meandering approach of the books may prefer the series which, though still quite laid back, is a bit more direct and fast-paced than the books.

In general, it’s excellent, entertaining viewing with lots of endearing, entertaining characters, and a variety of relationships and relationship types. There’s also nothing else quite like it on TV.

I’m about 30 minutes into Terminator: Salvation, and deeply confused as to how people, uhm, watch the whole thing without distractions. I mean, very, very boring here. So far not even worth snarking over. Though, isn’t it cute how the only female character with more than 40 seconds airtime is a mute, androgynous little kid? (Who is apparently better at the resistance fighter thing than the big strong men around her, but…) I shall leave it on while I work on catching up on drafting writeups. Once upon a time, I’m pretty sure James Cameron made movies that could hold my attention. I’ll make up for this later by watching historical (or ahistorical, as the case may be) dramas.

Also, I’ve been poking around LJ for people’s thoughts on recent Dollhouse and other SFF TV, and have learned 2 things:

1. On Dollhouse, it’s obvious that Victor doesn’t love Sierra, because he hasn’t punched her in the face. This, apparently, is Dollhouse code for how to know a man loves/will be in love with a woman.

2. Committing suicide is now female empowerment. Because choosing how you’ll die by killing yourself is claiming your destiny. Or something. These people should be forced to watch this scene in Stage Beauty 50000 times. (Embedding disabled, important part starts about 2 minutes in. First 2 minutes NSFW.)

However, to remind myself that I don’t hate the world, I spent most of yesterday watching No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Oh, wait, it was cancelled. Never mind. But still, quite lovely. Except that that woman loves her food. Which is normally quite endearing, except for when you can’t eat solid foods.

ETA:  I am informed James Cameron isn't connected to T:S.  This sin is off his plate, but he's also the one who decided to ditch Sarah and have John talk about how everything he knows, he learned from the terminator.  So really, it doesn't help him that much.
