This week's TeeVee

Actually, more than this week’s TV, as I’m a bit behind in posting on Pretty Little Liars. (And less than this week’s TV, because I haven’t watched White Collar. It seems to be universally regarded as Bad, so I’ll wait until there’s a good ep to follow it up with.)
1. Nikita was, well, Nikita. Dealing with foreign politics. This is not the show’s strong suit. But there was Nikita with guns. And Michael actually using his brain. (This is a show where the bad guys can’t use their brains too much, or the good guys’ plans will fall apart altogether. I really should be more critical about that.) But the best part was Nikita breaking off her heals because you can’t run and fight in high heals. Hmm…unless the best part was Nikita apparently, uhm, actually caring about minors drinking.
2. Pretty Little Liars continues to be giddy fun. Like, I don’t even care that the on guy who wasn’t creepy, a pedophile, or a Nice Guy left in a (understandable but misguided) huff, even though I really, really don’t like it when I dislike everyone of one gender in my shows.
Ok, actually, the dude with 90s hair who they seem to be tossing at the girls to see who he bounces off of best? He has the potential to be fun, but I’m not sure I trust the show at all when it comes to male characters. I mean, in the first half of the season, who would have thought that Lucas would reveal himself to be an Entitled Nice Guy. I actually really think I dislike Lucas more than Ezra at this point/ I mean, Ezra seems to be pretty decent outside of the “dating a student” thing, but “dating a minor who you have institutionalized power over” is a pretty major demerit for me. Also, the scene where she asked him out in class was reeeeeaaallllyyyy creepy, as was the follow up. Also, could they have been more obvious? Also, was Aria seriously going on about A saving her romantic relationship right after A cost Spencer her relationship with a way superior guy?
Alona Tal showed up. The episode was made for me the second she was on my screen.
I die of laughter over the girls’ horror over that video. Like, it’s so very clearly, uhm, sex, not killing? I must remind myself that they’re all virginal 16-year-olds.
I…am not sure about where Emily’s plotline is going? Like, it’s playing out pretty realistically, but I’m really not sure about how it played out with her mom separating them. Because not wanting someone who does drugs near your kid is a pretty justifiable reason for not wanting your kid around someone, but I don’t think the show is approaching it from that perspective at all.
Idly, I think the reason we have A targeting Hanna more than the others (or so it seems) is that Hanna has basically become the sweet and caring version of Allison.
3. Vampire Diaries was much better this week than it was last week. Not that that would have been hard. But it’s the whiplash effect, where one episode, I’m all “I WANT TO DROP THIS SHOW AND NEVER TOUCH IT AGAIN! Except for this part.” and the next episode is “OMG! OMG! OMG! Except this part. OMG!”
Note: Unless it seemed important to the rest of this plot, I only listened to Damon’s scenes this week, as opposed to actually watching them. I did note, though, that he’s back to raping in the name of Angst, and has the questionable honor of possibly being the first Nice Guy ever who’s also an evil murderer and rapist.
Moving on:
Jules! Has a pack! That she appears to be the alpha of? I hope she is! But her boyfriend is…Mini Damon? I get the feeling that he’s like Damon in that it isn’t just that he does bad things because he has to, or even that he does them without regret, (and this is the level where enjoying characters as antagonists hits a wall) but that he enjoys doing them, and likes the feeling of power that it gives him over people. The parts where he was torturing Caroline reminded me a lot of Damon torturing Mason, with Jules in the Stefan and Bonnie role of knowing what’s going on and even helping set it up, but not wanting to be a part of it, though with Jules it’s more “do whatever you have to” than the whole “Damon will do what Damon will do, and we can’t stop him” thing.
But! I’m so glad we got a bit more on her motivations. She’s, like, an evil momma bear. I also think she’s much older than the other werewolves we’ve seen.
Caroline, of course, owned this episode. She usually does these days. (Though I’m not fond of how the show sometimes seems to put down season 1 Caroline.) And I’m glad she was so no-nonsense at the end with Tyler. Tyler…I’m disappointed in him that he was so eager to believe a woman he’s literally had 2 conversations with over someone he’s known his whole life, and who risked her life to help him? But I suspect the show thought that flakiness was ok since Jules was telling the truth. (Like, I totally get why he’s having major issues, and most of it fairly justified? But there are things he needs to get sorted out for himself fast.)
Did Bonnie and Jeremy hook up while they were briefly in limbo? Like, I thought the last we heard there was Bonnie being all “Slow down, Turbo! I’m still processing you having a driver’s license!”
You know, I really do dislike John a lot? And am so mad at him getting the White Ash reveal, because now we’ll probably never get Meredith. But I did love that scene where he told Elena that her adoptive parents were her real parents and gave her her mother’s necklace, even though I would have rather had Isabel give that speech. I just really love the dynamic of two people who don’t want to be parents and would be terrible parents and never look back and regret choosing to not be parents, but still basically try to take on the world for their kid, who is all “OMG I totally got the losing hand with the genetic lottery.”
And Isabel’s superpower is apparently obscure research? I approve. And she is apparently off trying to thwart Klaus on her own? I am scared? (But I giggle at how she and John are apparently still working for Katherine. I hope John took Katherine some blood!)
Oh, and Jenna’s reaction to the paternity reveal was priceless. She was all “OMG GET ME OUT OF THIS SOAP OPERA I DON’T WANT IT!” Her reactions to horrifying things about Elena’s life are priceless.
In conclusion: SLUMBER PARTY! Stefan, I forgive you for bringing the wrong parent back.
