For whatever reason, no matter how much I love TVB dramas, unless it's a wuxia, I find it hard to post on one.

Before I get started, I shall offer a brief explanation of names.  TVB has a rather small talent pool, and most of the TVB dramas I watch are at  [profile] calixa's recommendation, so generally, I see even a smaller pool(not really a problem, as out tastes tend to line up.)  We also talk about them a lot.  Since I watch with English subs and she often watches with Vietnamese subs or dubs, we end up with different names for the characters.  As a result, they get nicknames.  As a result of that, I often have to force myself to learn real names.  For whatever reason, I never bothered to do that here.  Not an indication of liking, just laziness on my part.  Anyway...

Playboy:  Playboy is the male lead.  He is played by Wong Hei, who I first met in Shades of Truth, where he played a playboy cop who is a reincarnation of a famous hero, and who falls for a nerdy doctor.  His name will always be Playboy to me, even when it's totally wrong for the character(like here.)

Myolie:  Myolie is Myolie Wu, [profile] calixa's favorite TVB actress.  We just never bother to call her anything else.  Female lead.

Model:  Model is Playboy's love interest.  It's her profession.

Puppy Cop:  Puppy Cop is Myolie's love interest.  He plays an undercover cop, and a good one, but tends to have adorable puppylike expressions when not in cop mode.

Angry Cop:  Playboy's old friend and now his rival.  Not a bad guy, just in a bad mood because his girlfriend's been in a coma for a few years.

Triad Boss:  Self-explanatory.  Villain.  Really only brought up here because the actor seems to specialize in fun villains.

Note:  It's all pretty unspoilery...everything I mention is in the credits, revealed very early on, or typical TVB final act stuff(which, like kdramas, involves comas and blindness and amnesia and such, but not death in snow.)

Just a few simple icons made by blindly saving pictures and then clicking on thumbnails that didn't look spoilery.  Most are very simple because I haven't seen it yet and thus have no real feel for it.  Only 3 have text.

ETA:  My last 3 entries have used this icon.  I clearly like it too much.

Somewhere between the end of season 1 and here, Lina and Gourry split up with Zelgadis and Amelia.  Amelia's father, proving that he does not have a properly functioning brain, sends Amelia to a neighboring country who is amassing an army to tell them to knock it off.  Neighboring country is led by a wussy king who wants to  conquer the world, and his evil primadonna daughter, who has delusions of being a sorceress.  On her way to the palace, Amelia runs into Lina and Gourry.  Lina is beating up hoods who wrecked their table.  Gourry is amazed to have found people stupider than he is.  As they are clearly still living deep in the heart of denial-land, I suspect this happens a lot.

Amelia recognizes someone with less dipolomacy than her when she sees one, ditches them, and heads for the castle.  BUT OH NO! ZEL IS WORKING FOR THE BAD GUYS!!  (Because he thinks they can make him human again.)  Zel tries very, very hard to convince everyone that he's evil and bad.  As always, this inspires the urge in me to pat him on the head.  Except not really, because his hair is razor sharp wire.  While Amelia is busy freaking out at having to fight another "defender of justice," the castle guards sensibly tie her up.  Zel is secretly relieved he doesn't have to fight her and have his inner softie show.  Then Lina shows up, tells Zel he was lied to, and he switches sides in half a second.  Everyone takes this as a given.

Meanwhile, the gang seems to have realized that it is wise to evacuate the time zone when Lina is about to cut loose, and they've all taken to carrying around megaphones.  I approve.  With nothing better to do, the four start travelling to gether again.  Or, more accurately, Zel just can't escape them.  Later, Lina learns he's looking for a valuable book called the Clare Bible that can supposedly fix him.  Lina vows to get it for him.  She claims it's for the money, but we know better.  Along the way they meet a priest named Xellos, who is also looking for the book.

Insert general Slayers antics.

Xellos is fun.  He's one of those characters who is always triple and quadruple thinking everything and everyone.  He even manages to outthink Lina, which isn't very easy.  I suspect he cackles a lot when no one is looking.  Amelia seems to have lost about 10 levels of shriekiness.  I approve.  Zel remains and emotastic angstmuffin and the world's worst villain next to Kougaiji.  I also approve of this.  Lina and Gourry remain the same.  I cannot complain.

Lina, Gourry and Amelia remain amazingly obsessed with food.  I am particularly fond of the scene where where Lina and Amelia declare war over where they're going to eat.  Naturally, Zel sides with Amelia and Gourry with Lina.  I doubt either really cared what they ate as long as they ate, they just knew who would be dragging who off in the end anyway.  I'm amazed they didn't just eat all the food at one then move on to the other.  Naturally, rival sorcerers decide to hire them while they're on the outs.

Amelia also seems to think that Zel's skin and hair are cool.  Zel is too busy being emo about his lost humanity to realize a keeper when she thinks his weird looks are cool.

I was very interested in the show when it first came out, then forgot about it. Probably because it's one of those half-season series or something so people weren't posting on it for very long. While my main interest in the family is Elizabeth I, who I view as almost the most awesome person ever born(a few biblical people trump her) I have a general interest in the period. Like most historical periods that interest me, I know enough that I can sigh over some blatantly wrong things, but won't throw popcorn at historical inaccuracies. Things that go against the behavioral and social mores of the time tend to stick in my craw more than who married who in what year or what day a battle was fought on, barring extremely major things(like, you know, if someone decided it would suit their story better for The Battle of Hastings to take place in the spring of 1066 and that Harold didn't die in the battle, just got a bad boo-boo...)

Anyway, it's on DVD now...
