I got my hair cut today.  It's still long enough to tug at the ends when I put my hands behind my back, but not long enough to quite twirl the ends around my fingers, which just fells so odd...and my hands kept going when I was rinsing out my hair and squeezing along the length to make sure I got all the soap out.

Meanwhile, it is officially valentines day.  The world is drowning in pink.  I could choke.  I have no objections to pink as a general rule, and actually kinda like it(at least partly because I have reddish hair-straightup red in the sun-and can wear the color) but this is just nauseating.

[personal profile] swan_tower, author of the awesome feminist fantasy duology Doppelganger and Warrior and Witch, has posted an article on love triangles here.

My opinion on 99% of the blasted things is fairly well documented, but this is interesting(make it really necessary or I'm gone, make it the main conflict and kill me now, have it there just for the angst and get chunked against something, and in all cases, there had better be something compelling to keep me going.)  I particularly like this part:

It might seem all dramatic and heroic to have one of your candidates die nobly at the climax of the story, but overwhelmingly readers want the heroine to make up her own damn mind. In other words, don’t cheese out of your own conflict; step up and take responsibility for developing your characters, and make them make the hard choices.

These episodes were...odd.  Basically, at the end of the season's first End of the World arc, everyone ends up separated.

First up, Lina finds herself stuck in a bizarre reenactment of  Alice in Wonderland, where all the characters are food.  She find Zelgadis dressed up like a clown and sleeping, then blows everything up when she realizes they were in an attraction in and amusement park.  At least they found Filia outside.  later, the three ended up on a ghost ship where the antique-pottery loving captain was being menaced by a vengeful, pottery destroying ghost.  Lina breaks a lot of ceramics, Filia decides she wants to open a vase shop, and Zelgadis wisely refuses to participate in the insanity and goes off to practice his emo while playing guitar. Zel doesn't give me nearly enough excuses to call him a high-strung emotastic angstmuffin this season.

Meanwhile, Amelia and Gourry also washed up on another island.  While Gourry wanders around the forest starving to death, Amelia is rescued by a fishgirl and her fishman father.  Later, she learns that fishgirl is in love with a human boy, but fishman disapproves.  Being Amelia, she flamboyantly declares that she will help them to be together, and sets off on a quest to let them be of the same species.  Along the way she finds Gourry, feeds him, and forces him to dress up like a mermaid.  I cringe and hope that very brief stint is the only forced crossdressing he'll have to endure this season.  Later, the two end up joining some geriatric would-be warriors of justice, before finally finding the others.

Yes, I spent most of the time with my brain deliberately turned off so I could just sit back and enjoy the crack.  Sadly, there was no Xellos in these episodes.

In other news, Gourry was also able to justifiably call people stupid and crazy a lot.  I don't know if he's getting smarter, or if others are getting crazier and/or dumber.  Could be both.  He is also notably sword-less during these periods.  Perhaps the sword normally saps brainpower?

We wrap up the adventures in Shura and Shara with an amazingly emo romantic(I think?) send off between Ashura and Yasha, resulting in the gang having made the world a better place. Mixed in there is an awesome page of Yuuko hugging their swords. Then again, anything involving Yuuko is, by definition, awesome.

Then they end up in a place called Piffle World. No, I did not make that up. Anyway, there’s some plotline going on where they’re all in a race and the prize is Sakura’s feather. Entertaining enough, but not really holding me, on that aspect at least. However, now that Sakura is showing personality and initiative, she is being subjected to Kurogane’s watchful eye. Somehow, I think he walks around in a constant state of suspicion over everything. He also seems to be starting to transfer some of that massive princess complex of his over to Sakura…only to learn that a version of his very own princess, Tomoyo, is the person behind the race. Sadly for him, Tomoyo doesn’t even notice he exists and seems to fall in love with Sakura in half an instant.

Once I got over the inherent jollies in that, I was kinda bored until Shogo and the Clamp School Detectives showed up and started talking about conspiracies, at which point, it got more fun.

Honestly, I think I remember now that someone warned me the series got to be not-as-good at this point. It isn’t "throw it against the wall" or anything, but a definite drop(for me at least) from before. I am curious, though, about whether or not I’d like Clamp School Detectives, and if Shogo is from a previous Clamp work.

There is a debate going on across the way about what it would take for Captain Kirk to let a Klingon on the bridge of the Enterprise.

"Kirk is da man"  has been uttered multiple times.

I almost wish my Star Trek knowledge wasn't limited to very very vague The Next Generation memories from...what...High School?  Junior High?  Both?

Has anyone seen this?  Amazon seems to think I'd like it.  It sounds like it could be interesting...or really stupid.

I realize it is late.  However, at this work station, there is a pen lying out, a purse to the side, a book beside the pen, and a coat on the back of the chair.

Therefore, I cannot POSSIBLY understand how you could assume that the half-full soda bottle right beside the purse was trash.

No thanking,

Me
