After Season 2, everyone went their separate ways again(except Gourry and Lina, because the concept of not trailing after Lina is alien to him) until Prince Phil announces an expedition to explore the outer worlds.  Zelgadis zips over, hoping for a way to become human again, Lina and Gourry are lured by a job offer, and Amelia is going along as an ambassador.  They're joined this time around by Filia, a dragon priestess who looks like a pretty blonde but is really a gold dragon.  Xellos is once again there for Reasons As Yet Unknown.

Amelia seems to have realized that no one will ever take her seriously as long as she's part of Lina's entourage and attempts to play it cool and distant.  Sadly, she forgot who she's dealing with.  Gourry continues to function as an excuse to provide exposition.  Zelgadis attempts to be cool and distant, but like Amelia, he's forgotten who he's dealing with.  Filia is so highstrung she makes Zelgadis look all calm and laid back.  She's also amazingly proper, loves her tea, has a pink bow tied to her tail as a dragon, and keeps a giant mace(actually, I think this kind has a different name, but I forget it...) under her skirt.  I like her.

Filia and Xellos appear to have some sort of a history together and they reduce each other to a pair of one-upping, squabbling five-year-olds.  I think they used to date.  Possibly, they're divorced.

Sorcery as the Slayers-verse knows it is apparently very uncommon in the Outer Worlds, so everywhere they go, they're either taken for angels or evil demons.  Zelgadis loves the evil demons part.  Amelia loves the angels part.  Lina and Gourry just want food.  Filia sobs and wishes they'd focus.  Xellos enjoys the entertainment.  Sylphiel has also had a name dropping, so I'm on the lookout.  Zelgadis also worked in a "Will you two just get it out of your system already!" jibe for Lina and Gourry.  Of course, Gourry is too stupid to notice and he included "flat-chested" in there, so Lina got ditracted by that.  There's also a servant of Gaav, the Demon Dragon King from season 2, who claims to be as powerful as Gaav, and that Gourry's Sword of Light is really his.  I doubt that will go over well.  Lina has claims of that thing.

Lina's sister also got mentioned again, resulting in an amazingly overwhelming panic attack on Lina's part.  I am very depressed that the opening credits claim she won't show up.

Also, a thing that has been bugging me since early the first reason:  Zelgadis's hair is razor sharp wires.  In can cut through cannonballs and impale tables.  How, then, does he wear that hood?  Shouldn't his hair slice right through it?  Is it made of something special? What?  How?  Why?  Or should this be dumped in the "Sanzo and credit cards and newspapers" folder of "try to figure it out and your head will hurt and you won't be able to focus" things?

In list version:

1. Runaway temple-train-ruins.

2. Lina bullies dragons.

3. Gourry is an ace construction worker.

4. Filia and Xellos continue to reduce each other to the mental age of 5.

5. Gaav Jr. is apparently the last surviving member of the Ancient Dragon Race. Each member of the species was apparently as powerful as thousands of gold dragons. The gold dragons hunted them into extinction. *facepalm* I suppose this means there are millions of gold dragons? (Do they never think these powerful race/warrior race/assassin race things through?)

6. Lina successfully bullied dragons.

7. Filia and Zelgadis were surprisingly chipper about being thieves. Zel especially.

8. The 2 greatest rules of anime have been proven true: 1) No one but the heroes can be trusted, everyone else will sell you out. 2) Kids are smarter than all the adults combined. Even a single kid.

9. Filia bullied Lina. This is actually more impressive than Lina bullying dragons.

10. Lina can neither draw nor design architecture to save her life.

Also, this AMV greatly amuses me. (Really, Slayers has some AMVs with amazing timing, even if the picture quality isn't always great...how'd it get to be so lucky?)

I have to admit:  I like ValGaav(aka, Gaav Jr.)  oh, sure, I'm giddy the boundaries of reality and fiction separate us, but I like him.  He may be insane, more than a bit misguided, and out to destroy the world, but at least I can follow his thinking.  (And be glad it has no impact whatsoever on my life...)

Meanwhile, I must question what appear to be Filia's romantic inclinations.  First of all, there's that whole "squabbling like five year olds" thing with Xellos which half watches like they've been married for twenty years.  Now she's taken to standing on the sidelines, going "ValGaav" in typical shounen damsel fashion.  (Personally, I'm thinking she and Gourry should stand beside each other in a fight, going "ValGaav"  "Lina"  "ValGaav" Lina"...)  Filia, dear, I surprisingly adore you, but I'm thinking you need to ditch the gleefully machiavellian monster(his species, not a judgement statement) and the psychotic emo angstmuffin destroyer of worlds and go find yourself a nice gold dragon boy to settle down with.

Xellos doesn't surprise me by revealing he's willing to sell Lina out to ValGaav if ValGaav will join the monster race(and also that he knew he'd be rejected when he made the offer) and he doesn't surprise Lina with it, either.  She takes it as a given.  That and the fact that, in payment, she can use Xellos however she wants.  Xellos is lucky Lina is 95% nice.  Xellos does surprise me, though, by rescueing Filia.  I spent half a second wondering if I should stop joking about them being divorced/and old married couple and quasi takw it seriously.  Then he dropped her and I forgot to ponder it.

Meanwhile, the gang has to go to some "temple" that's couples only, and the couple is determined by what two people get the same colored ball.  Lina ends up with Zelgadis and Amelia with Gourry.  Lina and Gourry remain the two stupidest people in the world when it comes to these things.  Zelgadis accepts his fate with admirable calm.  Amelia senses there is something deeply wrong in the fabric of the universe.  Filia and Xellos get the same colored ball and refuse to go.  It involves  holding arms.

Later, Gourry is separated from the others and the other three earn my disapproval by attempting to compensate for the absence of his stupidity.  As a result, ValGaav's Fox-Person henchman gets it.  That guy is dumber than Gourry. I did some face palming, though I did gain enjoyment from Gourry's new hammer-sword-thing, not to mention what seems to be a newly developed ability to glean detailed, accurate instructions from when Lina says "Gourry" in a commanding tone.

They compensate for it later, though, by the return of the well plotted and executed plans and traps.  Plus, Lina has a very successful go at being badass.
