I love my wuxia DVDs, I truly do. At least partly because YesAsia-Taiseng tends to have some amazing...errors...in the subtitles at times.

I had to go with pain of crotch. It sounds like such a painful experience on top of having to surrender.

I wonder what the Chinese said.

mostly likely "(emotional) pain of kneeling" as it was a rather humiliating thing to have to do, esp for an overly proud cretin.

The fact that at the end of the scene(but before the line) the leader of the clan the series is about showed up and gave the speaker a "you got pawned" look doesn't help.

Yuppers. Dunno how good the quality is, though.

As a fair warning, though, a fair chunk of the cast dies(I'm about to get to that part...)

They were all so equally bad (and funny) that I couldn't pick one. :P Are they from Young Warriors? Because I'll be on the look out for them now.

Yes, yes they are. The "crack" shows up pretty much any time yelu xie talks about his(or another) army losing, the crotch line is after Pan Bao makes a fool of himself and the rape line is from Liu Lang later in the series.

"Referring to your best soldiers and "crack soldiers" and "crack armies.""

Ummm... is that supposed to be bad? That's actually a fairly normal usage in this part of the world.

It's the actual sentence structure and referrence that makes it bad...unless it's usually used to describe failure over there. When it's used here, it describes the best ones. But, as I mentioned to James, I suspect its the translator just plugging it in to take the place of as cultural word that either he/she didn't know, or didn't think we'd understand. When it appears in context, though...

Dave beat me to it, but 'crack ___' in regards to the military is a commonly accepted term in our hemisphere, too. You hear it a lot when historians talk about World War 2, in particular ("The Waffen SS were Germany's crack troops of the war")

Between the other two, I think the 'crotch' must win out.

I've only heard it before in term is "best" soldiers...but in this case, it's often used to talk about them having failed, and the wording of the actual sentences makes me think it was a cultural word the translator either thought we wouldn't know, or didn't know him/herself.
