[Poll #1143316]But I think I'll watch the Slayers OVA first. For snark purposes.

Voting for Last Exile as it was rather amusingly steampunky, one of the airship captains is a dramatic angstmuffin, and there's a bit of Mustang/Hawkeye vibe between him and his first officer.

Gunlock...how far have you read in the manga? It's not particularly spoilery; there are a LOT of non-manga filler episodes this time around, when it does bother to stick to the manga continuity it kind of sort of follows up to the very beginning of the stuff with Hazel...and then it goes waaaaaaaaaay off into left field. Hazel and Gato here, compared to in the manga, are vastly less interesting (I particularly hate hate hate what the anime did with Gat, who is my favorite woobie undead anime Indian...ok, so he's the only one, details details!). The animation is also just painfully inconsistent -- yes, even more so than the two previous series. When it's good, it's not much better than mediocre, and when it's bad, it's downright HORRIBLE. I'd really only recommend it if you're a desperate Saiyuki completist, or you feel like mocking cheesy filler scripts and sloppy art.

I've been told about the dramatic angstmuffin in LE at length before.

"I'd really only recommend it if you're a desperate Saiyuki completist, or you feel like mocking cheesy filler scripts and sloppy art."

Uhm...uh...all the above? I actively despise Hazel(very interesting character, but I get much pleasure from my hatred) but do like Gat, but definately don't want spoilers for beyond Vol 7 of Reload. And...uhm...I freely confess I'm in the anime for the Kougaiji. They tend to include him a lot in the fillers, based on the first two episodes.

Angstmuffin!captain has a great gift for managing to strike dramatic poses in spots where the wind will dramatically blow his hair and cape about. The dub also has him voiced by Crispin Freeman, which is always a nice, appreciated touch if one is stuck watching the dubs on broadcast. (I prefer subs just so I can keep my ears open for little bits that aren't getting translated, but love CF's voice to bits.)

And Gunlock is definitely primo snark-blogging fodder. There are some good Kougaiji moments, but probably not enough to make you happy -- although IIRC he doesn't have as many wildly OOC moments as some of the others do.

Judging by the RFB broadcasts, I think you're pretty spoiler-safe as the manga canon really doesn't seem to be going in the same direction as the anime did -- and really, they suck out so much of the personality and change the backstory enough for Gat and Hazel that they're scarcely even the same characters any more.

And just think of the QUALITY art (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/telophase14/NDVD_024.jpg) you have to look forward to!

Aaah...I do love it when my angstmuffins know how to pose dramatically in the wind. Crispin Freeman is also a bonus.

That art is...I shall choose to believe that everyone but Sanzo is deliberately drawn that way.

In this lifetime, there will not be enough Kougaiji to make me happy. I must love him enough to compensate for those who don't.

I'm suuuuure it's deliberate. Just like the scene where there's a three-way rumble between the Kou-tachi, Sanzo-ikkou, and Hazel-ikkou, and you see Gat holding Doku off the ground one-handed while holding a gun to his head with his other hand...while reloading said gun with his OTHER other hand. *headdesk*

"I must love him enough to compensate for those who don't."

I think you've just summed up the very existence of fandom as a movement in that sentence.

Except I do not automatically hate any character in his vicinity who has a vagina, nor do I imply that those who do not love are stupid, nor do I write dissertations about how he is far superior to anything else in the universe. Nor do I center my internet life around him. There are far too many things to love for any of that.

Those examples are just what happens when fandom goes too far, though. I like to think that most fans have better hold of their own sanity than that. (Note, I'm saying "sanity", not "normality"... even sane Fans can't really be described as "normal"... and anyway, a lot of the time, "normal" is just a nice way of saying "boring"...)
