#67-69(conclusion of “The Good Prince”): Err…I took so long between reading the earlier parts of this and these chapters that I forget a lot of what was going on. Mostly, these issues were the conclusion of the arc. Except maybe for the Sacred Grove being transferred to Fly’s lands and Fly turning the wooden soldier’s back into trees, I don’t really think anything here was unexpected. I never really thought there was any chance of Fly dying at the end, or losing, so it was just seeing how he established Haven and how he cleared the playing field for the war. I’m not sure I agree that Fly is completely innocent of the conquered soldiers Gepetto eventually had killed. While Gepetto created the original situation, the immediate situation that resulted in the soldiers dying was created by Fly. Interesting to see, though, the The Emperor seems to be starting to chafe against Gepetto’s control. Maybe he’s hitting puberty.
#70: Like most of the fans, it seems the entirety of the farm was assuming Boy Blue and Rose Red had a thing going. Except the fans realized they hadn’t made it to the bedrooms yet. I think. Really, given her history, I wonder how his relative virtue has remained intact for so long. I guess that now that Snow and Bigby are married, that’s going to get stretched out as long as Willingham can. (Really, given her exes, can you blame Rose for giving the nice guy “we’re just friends” speech? Probably thinks it’s a 5 minute fluke that she’s over.) I don’t particularly care for Beauty deliberately being egged on and kept in the dark by everyone.
#71-72: Cinderella the Spy. Cinderella the Spy putting eyes out with her bare fingers. And shooting many people with nary a worry. And beating people up. Sometimes with her high heels. And kneecapping. This is my Fables happy place. Somewhere in there, I think there was plot stuff like Pinocchio supposedly betraying the Empire and returning to Fabletown, and the two wooden soldier spies also surrendering, but that isn’t as important.
#73-75: I surprisingly have little to say about the war. Willingham’s war arcs are always interesting, but I should have read this and the end of “The Good Prince” properly spaced out, as opposed to in one day. I have my doubts about Prince Charming being dead. I mean, look at the things Goldilocks and Jack have survived. And he’s as big (or bigger) than they are. He has the dreams of virtually every adolescent girl on the planet to keep him going. But why are we 75 issues in, and still not even a mention of Gerda? And I hope they don’t leave Briar Rose and
