Via [livejournal.com profile] swanjun , new Viz licenses.

Not sure if I'll be checking any out.  Rasetsu probably, even though Yurara, while starting with a lot of potential, ended up a disappointment.  OTOH, I've loved the other  two series by Chika Shiomi that I've read, and Rasetsu is about the more interesting characters.  Black Bird's description at Baka Updates sounded like it could be fun until I got to the part where her childhood friend-turned-protector is now her teacher.

Meanwhile, what will it take to get them to license Tokyo Crazy Paradise and Seven Seeds already?

ETA:  Err...missed Ooku at the top of the list.  That one I've heard good things about.

Yeah, I noted that with happiness then forgot all about it as I was seeing what the other titles were.

Ooku would have had me from "AU history of the Tokugawa shogunate" or "serious exploration of gender role reversal" alone, even coming from a totally unknown mangaka. Both elements together, and from Fumi Yoshinaga, who has a ridiculous track record of even managing to take tropes I dislike or am actively squicked by and making them work? I do not have words, capslock, or sparkletext sufficient to convey my overwhelming squee.

Seconding! I just did little celebratory dance in my chair. It's been long enough that I was afraid no one was going to pick it up.

I think you'll like Rasetsu since it has Yako from Yurara in it.

I am excited about the Tail of the Moon prequel. 'Bout darn time they got it.

I lost interest in Tail of the Moon a while back, but Rasetsu has both Yako and the guardian spirit, who were much more intereting than the leads. And hopefully there will be no incredibly irritating love triangle.

Yeah, I preferred Yako as well. And that's why it surprised me how she favored the other guy over him, even though he was a far more popular character.

Guess I shouldn't complain since I (we) got another series where he's still around.

I KNOW! Viz has been taunting us for years by listing it on the back cover of every volume...

Ooku: The Inner Chamber

EEEEEEE!!!!

By passing this news along, you have single-handedly rescued this week from being a giant ball of unmitigated suck. Thanks so much!!!!

The price point ($12.99) indicates it'll be part of their fancy-schmancy "signature" imprint, so even better!

I don't know if you were thanking megan or me, but I'm happy to spread the squee! :)

I also second Megan's call for Tokyo Crazy Paradise and 7SEEDS. I want Cat Street, too. Maybe they'll license it now that the end of Boys Over Flowers is in sight.

Oooooh! Fumi Yoshinaga! By VIZ, no less...that's a first; I think every other one of her works in English was published by DMP or Tokyopop. I wonder if the material is a departure for Yoshinaga, or if it's a departure for VIZ? Have they ever published any yaoi or BL? I cannot for the life of me remember.

I don't know anything about any of the others series (I like Shiomi, but I've never gotten around to finishing any of her series, mostly for lack of funds)

Viz has Banana Fish, which I believe is BL. Some others have subplots, but I don't think they have any actual yaoi/BL titles. I'm not sure Ooku, from what I've heard of it, is BL, though.

From: [identity profile] cerusee.livejournal.com
Oh, that's right. Unless I'm forgetting something obvious, I think that any yaoi/BL/yuri/shoujo-ai that VIZ has picked up has tended to fly under the radar because they haven't made an imprint or a line for it--heaven knows, they do not shy away at mature material, but they're not constructing a brand identity on it. The Signature line is the closest they've come to that, and with a few exceptions, the titles in that line tend to contain more horror and violence than sexual content, heterosexual or otherwise.

I will be interested in finding out the nature and content of Ooku on that front. But whatever the content of Ooku turns out to be, I'm excited about it, 'cause it's Fumi Yoshinaga, and yaoi or not, even her sub-par work is heads and shoulders above most everything else.

Kimi ni Todoke is supposed to be very good, actually. It won the Kodansha award for best shoujo once :)

I assume you asked about the award? this year ann (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-05-13/32nd-annual-kodansha-manga-awards-announced)

ack sorry, reposted for broken link

There's an article on the awards here (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-05-13/32nd-annual-kodansha-manga-awards-announced) and there's a brief summary if you click the series title. I read the first chapter in scanlation a few months ago and the main character is pretty appealing - she's shy and never seems to quite manage to get past her undeserved reputation for being scary. It also had a love interest who isn't a jerk, another point in its favor (I can't stand a lot of shoujo like Hana Yori Dango where the boy is a twerp, even if he has deep inner pain or whatever). That said it didn't immediately click with me either, so.. ^^;

This is a bit off-topic, but I feel like there's been a wave of main characters who are socially awkward or just straight-out otaku the past few years. Soul Eater actually has a character with OCD, and I've never seen that in a manga (let alone a fighting series) before.

I forget the last time I sent an email to Viz about 7 Seeds. ;-; I mean they've licensed enough Yumi Tamura to give us her new series right? Not like i'm asking for an older series here...

I'm happy the Tail of the Moon prequel is coming out, I read that (in scanlations) looooong ass time ago and enjoyed it more thoroughly then Tail of the Moon (though its so much shorter then Tail so that kinda helps). I wanna read Yurara and now I really need to read it since the sequel is coming out.

What's Children of the Sea about?
