Dear regular oil change place,

You went out of business.  Why did you have to go and do that?

Dear oil change place I ended up going to,

Yes, I am a woman.  Yes, machinery in general is my enemy and we do not understand each other.  No, I am not an idiot.  Yes, I can tell when I'm being talked down to with the assumption that I am incapable of either reasonable thought or the ability to understand words of one syllable.  Thank you for reminding me why I haven't taken my business to you in 4 years.

(I love my state.  I do not love its "good old boys" attitude.)

Dear mailman,

I am very, very glad that, among other things, I decided to bring some of my laundry to the apartment today before work, what with your leaving a box at the door and all.  (It was just 3 manga that i didn't even spend $20 on total, but that's not the point.)

Dear Hastings,

Between your taking 3 weeks to get my copy of Larklight in and your employee's "such a hassle" attitude at my ordering a whole three books, I am reminded of why I always do my local special ordering at Waldenbooks, where they don't get annoyed by having to provide customer service.

While at Hastings, though, I did do some browsing.  Anyone have opinions on any of the following?  (All of which sound like they'd either be fun, or leave me extremely annoyed.)

Alex Archer's Rogue Angel series
John Levitt's Dog Days
Kristin Landon's The Hidden Worlds
Talia Gryphon's Key to Conflict (and sequels)

The amazon delivery people once left £100 of external harddrive outside my door in the rain. Bearing in mind this delivery service is intended for delivery of expensive technology type items I was not happy. Luckily I just got ome as the guy was leaving but still, it was REALLY DUMB on their part.

That review made my day. Werebears? Empathic leakage? Real psychologist (because, you know, you have to be worried about those fake ones that take advantage of paranormal entities)? All that and horrifically written sex scenes? That's impressive in its own mad way.

It's pretty much a drinking game waiting to happen. ;)

You will get really annoyed at Talia Gryphon.

Either that or laugh hysterically in disbelief.

So I gather from the review. (But she has a blowtorch on the cover!)

That's because she's a blonde spitfire.

Yes. The actual text refers to her as a blond spitfire.

Absolutely hate that. I live in one of those "good ol' boy" states, too. :\

your experience is why I have my friend Kimmi change my oil whenever I can. Or at least have her with me when I have to take it some place because the second they start talking down to us she whips out her big old brain of knowledge and out car smarts them (or it turns into a long 'who is smarter' war that I am forced to endure).

re: Alex Archer books...they are a hit or miss serial series. The first one 'Destiny' is pretty much a must if you are gonna read the series, but after that you can either read them or ignore them as you like. Not much chronological order to them either (that I can discern). Usually if you can read the first chapter without flinching and burning the book you're set for the rest of it. With a rotating staff of now...3 or 4 authors the style often sways back and forth, though the newest author I know of is Michelle Hauf, and is the only female writer I know of.

re: The Hidden Worlds. I really enjoyed this book (the sequel 'Cold Minds' is packed away to read once I unpack), but some of it can get stomach clenching. Rape, incest, m/m scenes (innuendo, talk, action) and some violence (plus some very sexist men...well I guess xenophobic is almost a better term...) may or may not offend. The World Building is solid however and the main two chars are pretty awesome. More Sci-Fi then I expected from the cover image. If you read the first one and enjoy it you pretty much have to read the second one (or not know what happens with certain plot threads, relationships and characters).

Re: John Levitt's Dog Days: I liked the book very much. It has a Jim Butcher's Dresden Files feel to it. The main character is a typical guy with a good heart. The female characters in the book are not interesting, strong and not cliches'. I think you'll like it.

Dog Days you should enjoy.

Key To Conspiracy is one that you read only if you are into "snarky" reading. The third book was the worst. Everything that people hate about the current Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton is true of this series. There is no logic to it. You don't like the lead (at least I didn't) and it contradicts a bunch of standard rules of psychology (though the sex therapist bit in the third book was probably the one where I laugh the hardest). Read at your own risk. Admittedly, it was a cool idea, just totally lost on how to implement it.

Alex Archer books are definitely hit and miss. STart with the first and go from there. I read it because I thought it would be similiar to Indiana Jones or Tomb RAider. Not quite.

Ummm...spoiler code. I don't think that this is so much spoilery since I'm not talking about plot, but...idk.

I don't know about everything else, but I started reading Key to Conflict...and I haven't been able to finish it for lots of reasons. One--the vampires are really, really old-fashioned chauvinists. In fact, every guy that I've encountered in the series so far that is male comes off as an old-fashioned chauvinist (or, at least, the ones that take a liking to the main character). And there's a ridiculous amount of sex.

The only thing that kept me reading it was the main character's creativity in swear words and metaphors.

Yeah, blowtorch on the cover aside, it sounds like I wouldn't care for this.
