Specifically, how are they related, or are they just always mentioned together, and is there a viewing order with the two.

Spooks and MI-5 are the same show; MI-5 is just its name in the US.

Ah, cool. Thanks. I see both names but rarely an explanation.

It's because Spooks is a derogatory term for African-Americans. (I never would've made the connection but mom told me about it, she loves the show.)

Interesting. I've only ever heard it applied to spies.

It's an older term, I think just before our generation.

The Anthony Hopkins character in The Human Stain (and I'm guessing the book too?) brings about everything in the movie because he asks if two missing students are "spooks," meaning ghosts because they're never there. Turns out they're both black and they got him fired for race discrimination.

I've never really heard/seen it myself, other than that example.

Well, that makes my mom calling me 'Spook' all the time all the weirder, since I'm white as white can be...

Probably only thinks of it in terms of ghosts. It's your vampiric habits.

lol, she could be using it in terms of a ghost :D

I didn't know it was a derogatory term until mom pointed it out, multiple times... in fact, each time she tries to tell me to watch the show.

I can't speak for everyone, but I never had issues just watching random episodes.

It is, however, VERY ANGSTY AND HEAVY AND LOOK AT OUR DRAMUH. Though it's far better at it than, say, BSG is. Two episodes, and I need happyfluffy fic and crack.

MI-5 isn't the greatest show in the world, but it's very, very suspenseful, because it has a constantly rotating cast.
