Spooks/MI-5 question

Specifically, how are they related, or are they just always mentioned together, and is there a viewing order with the two.

It's an older term, I think just before our generation.

The Anthony Hopkins character in The Human Stain (and I'm guessing the book too?) brings about everything in the movie because he asks if two missing students are "spooks," meaning ghosts because they're never there. Turns out they're both black and they got him fired for race discrimination.

I've never really heard/seen it myself, other than that example.
