Do they seriously not require grammar for English majors anymore?  Mapping sentences that take up a full page? Analyzing and dissecting every type of phrase or word known to the English language?

ARE PEOPLE TRULY NO LONGER REQUIRED TO TAKE THAT COURSE?

It was the most feared course at my university!  English majors trembled at its coming! Getting a B- was cause for celebration!  I still catch myself mapping sentences without even thinking about what I'm doing!  And you don't have to take the course any more?  Or, at least, not everyone does?

EXCUSE ME PLEASE!  I MUST GO HATE ON EVERY ENGLISH MAJOR EVER WHO IS YOUNGER THAN ME AND/OR WAS NOT REQUIRED TO TAKE THAT COURSE BY THEIR UNIVERSITY!

ETA:  I should mention that I had the Junior High and High School versions, too, and, while hard, there wasn't much comparison.

I'm one of the I.T. blokes in a large organisation. Despite the fact that I'm middle aged, don't work in anything requiring knowledge of English and quit school after getting School Certificate, I'm the one who gets pinged for proof-reading jobs by our publicity and promotional people... because none of them are capable of doing the job. Advanced grammar isn't something I've even done... but the level of ignorance of the basics Out There In The Business World is simply beyond belief.

My head meets my office desk on a regular basis.

Hello, we seem to be living out remarkably parallel lives! I was ranting about very similar things to Megan the other night -- I've worked in a number of different fields, and time and time again, whether or not it was technically part of my job or not, I've wound up being the one who had to correct and proofread (sometimes to the point of rewriting large chunks) documents written by corner-office executives with advanced degrees from prestigious universities...who couldn't even manage to write a simple, routine bread-and-butter memo or letter that wasn't full of grammar, spelling, and vocabulary errors that would make you weep for humanity.
