The Pretty Little Liars Halloween episode was about 30% a PLL episode, and 70% a backdoor pilot for Ravenswood. Which was immediately followed by the actual Ravenswood pilot. Thankfully, I went in forewarned and so already had my expectations adjusted. The parts that actually were PLL were good and have me very eager for the second half of the season.

And then there's Ravenswood itself, which seems to be trying hard both to keep the crossover PLL fans happy and to separate itself from PLL as much as possible. Ravenswood is another of this seasons new gothic shows, this time about 5 teens in a small town known for its weirdness. The teens (one of whom is Caleb from PLL, meaning that PLL now has NO major male characters who I like at all, unless they bring Caleb and/or Jason back) appear to be part of a curse, and at least two of them are possibly doppelgangers of residents who died over a century ago. The curse may or may not be connected to a flood from somewhere around the same time that killed many of the town's residents.

I'm not sure about what they've chosen to do with Nicole Gale Anderson's character at all (and that's not even touching on the whitewashing) and I think it's going to take it a little while to really find its footing, but I'm interested.

-I'm sure many would label it daring to kill off your main character in the first 5 minutes of the second episode, but, uhm, I'm sitting here going "another dead WoC...who is now a ghost. And was playing a character we appear to be meant to read as white." I was wondering where they were going, especially since they were dropping Miranda/Caleb hints and I don't think they're planning to have Caleb stray from Hanna at all (if nothing else, Tyler Blackburn is apparently a huge supporter of Hanna/Caleb), and fearing it was there. but we'll see how it goes. Hopefully, more people besides Caleb will be able to see her soon.

-No, pretty darkhaired girl! Don't have private sessions with your handsome young teacher! Don't you know what show you're a spinoff of? That way lies pedophilia.

-Really, though, it sucks to be Olivia. (And Luke, but I get the feeling Luke currently enjoys antagonizing people, though it's understandable. I need to figure out where I know the actor from, though.)

-Also, I think their father's death is connected to the curse, and he may have been killed because he was trying to save them from it.

-So, Remy is the Spencer of the show? Only considerably less privileged. (I love Spencer, but the girl oozes unexamined privilege.) I hope every episode has her doing obscure research and finding paranormal things.

I'm also current with Witches of East End, which continues to be charming and delightful, if not necessarily a high quality show. Also, watching the latest episode just after rewatching Practical Magic really emphasized the similarities between them. (Note that I'm not complaining about those similarities.

-I like Freya but really really do not care about that love triangle, though both options certainly do result in a lot of pretty. I am wondering, though, what's up with that family. I think they're possibly in a similar situation as the Beauchamps, but if so, i think we would have had a hint of recognition from Joanna by now. Killian, at least, is connected to Freya from at least one other lifetime, though I have a feeling that the whole triangle is actually a recurring thing with them.

-I was, however, starting to get into Ingrid/Mike. And then faily plot happened. SIGH. You only had oe major POC character there, show. (I'd like it if Barb became a major character, but I don't think she will.)

-Andrew from Buffy and Buffy's RL husband are both on the show now. This amuses me.

-So, while I don't ship Joanna/Wendy, I am entertained by how much the WRITERS seem to (and half expect a revelation that they aren't biological sisters.)

-I am enjoying Anthony Lemke's turn as Joanna's probably amoral smarmy yet charming immortal lawyer buddy. He's certainly managing "smarmy yet charming" better here than he did in Lost Girl. (Though I like him best in Queen of Swords.) I might be shipping Joanna/Harrison a bit, though in a one-sided way.

-I appreciate that the writers are ignoring Madchen Amick's biological ways and declaring that she can do and wear stuff that's usually reserved for actresses under 30, and find it perfectly normal and natural.

-I want more details about past lives, instead of just brief glimpses. Hopefully those are coming soon.

With Ravenswood out, I think I'm through with the new shows of the season that i'll be following, though there are a couple I'll likely check out on DVD, or start watching if I hear something about them that makes me think I need to get on that train already.
