Nov. 16th, 2014 06:01 pm I just finished watching season 2 of Witches of East End and I really love that show (despite the fact that literally everything about it when it comes to race makes me want to bash my face into the keyboard) however...
( exceptionally annoyed spoiler )
And then I went to see when season 3 was going to start, only to learn that it was cancelled. Off to be sad now, as opposed to posting actual thoughts. (But for those who were still watching, feel free to comment about anything in the show that you want my opinions on.)

Beauty and the Beast 2.1-2.8:
( spoilers )
Haven 4.12-4.13:
( spoilers )
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries 2.13: I'd say that this was a delightful "snowbound and locked in a house with a killer" episode, but poor Aunt Prudence was tormented too much for me to call it delightful.
( spoilers )
Witches of East End 1.10: So glad the show is renewed, especially giving that ending.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries 2.12: For the most part, I liked this more than i did the book it's based on (The one with the evil nuns. I forget what the title was, but I think it's the most recent, stateside at least.) but wasn't thrilled with the bad guy reveal.
( spoilers )
There is AN ENTIRE MONTH between this episode and the season finale. Though now they're calling the finale a Christmas Special.
Sleepy Hollow 1.9: So many flashbacks to The Woods and Rose Red in this episode.
( spoilers )
Witches of East End 1.8-1.9: Another one with a break between the last two episodes, though this one is only skipping a week.
Haven 4.10: Well, that was considerably better than last episode.
( spoilers )Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries 2.11: Wow, Essie Davis can really sing. I now expect Phryne to sing every episode. (Nathan Page isn't bad either.)
( spoilers )
Ravenswood 1.5: And we've reached the midseason finale already. Overall, while I enjoy the show, it's been disappointing, and not nearly as good or involving as I was expecting. The mystery has potential and it does spooky moments well, but more often than not, I feel like it doesn't really know where it's going. I will watch the second half of the season, though.
Sleepy hollow 1.8:
( spoilers )
Witches of East End 1.7:
( spoilers )
Meanwhile, I'm a good 6 episodes behind on Person of Interest. While I tend to avoid spoilers, things I follow are generally fairly circumspect about spoilers for the show, so I've never had to be cautious. As a result, I kind of got bombarded by spoilers for tonight's episode earlier.
( My Reaction. post-soothing dark chocolate truffles and raging on twitter. )

The latest episode of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries was delightful as always (though a bit darker than usual) but I don't have much to say about it. I've also watched all the episodes of Poirot's final season, and it's excellent as always, but I have yet to come to terms with the fact that there's only one more episode of David Suchet as Poirot EVER.

Witches of East End: Apparently I accidentally got invested?

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries: FYI, season one is now streaming on Netflix. Also, my twitter feed is slowly falling prey to the series, which pleases me.

Ravenswood: A little better at the "We want to separate ourselves from PLL but make sure we keep all the PLL fans" thing this week.
( spoilers )
For the curious: I'm keeping up with Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Ravenswood, Sleepy Hollow, Witches of East End, and Haven*, waiting for Nikita and Pretty Little Liars to start up again, and am queueing Elementary, Beauty and the Beast and Person of Interest for when I'm in the mood, but just can't work up the desire for procedurals right now. I've moved Covert Affairs and White Collar to DVD only series, and everything I've heard about season 2 of Revolution tells me that it would annoy me a lot, so it's gone unless reliable sources start telling me good things. Season 2 of The Paradise is also airing in the UK now, but I'm waiting until it's over.
*One of these is not like the rest...

The Pretty Little Liars Halloween episode was about 30% a PLL episode, and 70% a backdoor pilot for Ravenswood. Which was immediately followed by the actual Ravenswood pilot. Thankfully, I went in forewarned and so already had my expectations adjusted. The parts that actually were PLL were good and have me very eager for the second half of the season.
And then there's Ravenswood itself, which seems to be trying hard both to keep the crossover PLL fans happy and to separate itself from PLL as much as possible. Ravenswood is another of this seasons new gothic shows, this time about 5 teens in a small town known for its weirdness. The teens (one of whom is Caleb from PLL, meaning that PLL now has NO major male characters who I like at all, unless they bring Caleb and/or Jason back) appear to be part of a curse, and at least two of them are possibly doppelgangers of residents who died over a century ago. The curse may or may not be connected to a flood from somewhere around the same time that killed many of the town's residents.
I'm not sure about what they've chosen to do with Nicole Gale Anderson's character at all (and that's not even touching on the whitewashing) and I think it's going to take it a little while to really find its footing, but I'm interested.
( spoilers )
I'm also current with Witches of East End, which continues to be charming and delightful, if not necessarily a high quality show. Also, watching the latest episode just after rewatching Practical Magic really emphasized the similarities between them. (Note that I'm not complaining about those similarities.
( spoilers )
With Ravenswood out, I think I'm through with the new shows of the season that i'll be following, though there are a couple I'll likely check out on DVD, or start watching if I hear something about them that makes me think I need to get on that train already.

As people who follow me on twitter know, I kind of fell head over heals for Sleepy Hollow. The series is very loosely based on the short story, and featured Ichabod Crane being a Revolutionary War hero who dies and is resurrected in the present day to fight the headless horseman, who has also been resurrected in the present. Ichabod is joined by Abbie Mills, a police lieutenant who's about a foot-and-a-half shorter than him (seriously, the show wants to make sure we never forget that), who met a demon in the woods when she was a teenager and has spent the rest of her life trying to forget that.
It's cheesy and the plot holes are ginormous, but I adore the characters and, while the plot makes it hard to take it seriously, the show really knows its visual gothic tropes, and revels in them. It also often reminds me of shoujo manga in some ways, probably because it's like something Kaori Yuki would come up with. Only somewhat more logical, with way way way less misogyny, and less incest.
( spoilers )
I also watched the pilot of Witches of East End, which is based on books by Melissa de la Cruz that I haven't read. The pilot was a bit slow to get going and rather silly in large places, but I liked it a lot. Julia Ormond and Madchen Amick are sisters who are semi-immortal witches named Joanna and Wendy who have been estranged for the last century when Wendy finds Joanna again after learning someone is trying to kill Joanna. Joanna also has two daughters, Freya and Ingrid, who don't know they're witches. Freya is recently engaged, but keeps having sex dreams about her fiance's estranged brother, Killian. Estranged siblings appears to be a Thing here.
( mild spoiler for the Freya/Killian subplot )
The witches are falling a bit into stereotypes-Joanna is serious and responsible and wants a normal life, while Wendy is a Bad Girl who fully embraces her witch nature and has wild adventures, Freya is freespirited and a little wild and dreamy and impulsive, while Ingrid is serious and cynical and logical-but I like them and their interactions. Very cheesy and soapy, but I liked it and am interested in the plot, though even if I hadn't cared much for it, I probably would have stuck around for a few more episodes for Madchen Amick and Julia Ormond.
