It occurred to me that a few people who might be interested in this may not have seen it yet, and so I bring you the trailer for the Korean adaptation of Antique Bakery. I am told by those who know such things that it's actually much gayer than the manga. (Which, actually, is kind of interesting. With Korean dramas, you usually have to interpret a hug as kissing, and a few pecks as a makeout session. But the movies? Not so conservative... At all.)

Anyway, trailer:

I have to say, even though I'm not very interested in the movie, the trailer is addictively cute (I think it's the music) the food pr0n looks amazing, and that's the first time I've ever thought Joo Ji Hoon looked attractive at all. (Yes, I know, heresy, but I've never understood why he's so popular.) The Very Very Gay baker is cuter, though. If nothing else, it looks much more entertaining than the Japanese adaptation. How anything with Fujiki Naohito and Abe Hiroshi managed to be dull is something I'll never understand.

Meanwhile, I'm thinking of starting a drinking game for anytime someone says Yoon Eun Hye should have been cast as Makino in the Korean Hana Yori Dango. Seriously, did she even audition? And, frankly, I can't picture her in the role. I like her, but in 24 episodes of Goong and 4 of Vineyard Man, I've seen her stand up for herself exactly once. For about 7 seconds, and then it was back to the cutesy protesting. Still, I have 12 episodes of Vineyard Man and all of Coffee Prince to watch, so my opinion could change. If nothing else, Vineyard Man is already a vast improvement over Goong.

Heh. Goong was so cutesy it gave me a tooth-ache (I still like it, though) and I couldn't get past the first episode of Vineyard Man. However, Coffee Prince cemented my love for YEH. Coffee Prince is golden: people even coming in the vicinity of this drama become hugely likable. Seriously, nobody could have impersonated the heroin as well as Yoon Eun Hye did. She was feisty and strong without eschewing a vulnerable side. Favourite drama heroin ever...but I still don't feel her as Makino. Or it could be that I'm just fed up with the zillion adaptation of a manga that was my youth. I'll now go and yell at kids to get off my lawn.

From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
The cutesyness in Goong wouldn't be so bad for me if it weren't for the rest of it. (Hint: it punched my "heck no!" button in the first few minutes by setting it up that the cute and perky but dim girl was wonderful and precious and darling, but of course the smart, elegant girl with ambitions and goals who didn't give in to her boyfriend's ultimatum when he gave her two seconds to think about it was the Evil Other.)

Waitwaitwait, there's a Korean Hana Yori Dango? I totally thought there was only a Japanese version and a Taiwanese one (which I didn't really have any interest in watching, because I never actually found the F4 boyband especially appealing).

The Korean HYD only just cast Makino (and everyone is screeching because she isn't whoever they would have picked and doesn't have whatever "look" they think she should have) so it isn't out yet. I like the Japanese version, but the TW version not as much.

I saw the trailer, downloaded vol one of the manga in giddy excitement, read and was beyond disappointed. For one, it was confusing, had some vapid stuff (even for yaoi/shounen ai) and I just wasn't feeling any of it at all. Just goes to show, I do love my slash but this Japanese yaoi/shounen ai business rarely makes me go "ooh yay!". Funny how that goes.

But I think the movie might turn out okay, I expect that cast of actors to flesh out the characters so I might actually care about them.

Edit: re:YEH, honestly I think people just want her in any drama. Anybody who didn't love Goong, loved Coffee Prince, so she's got a huge amount of fans.

I've had the manga recced a few times and, given who some of the reccers are, might check it out eventually, but it isn't quite a priority.

YEH: My problem is that she's cute, and they rely on that to carry entire dramas, but in a way that I find cloying instead of cute. Not her fault, but the fault of behind the scenes people who don't know "cute" and "cutesy" aren't the same thing.

You might want to check out the second volume - I dunno, you might still not like it, but personally I was a little underwhelmed by the first volume but thought that after that it was really adorable and hilarious. (Granted I am kind of biased in favor of Fumi Yoshinaga, though - I'm biased in favor of anyone who manages to more often than not fit female characters into BL series and make them REAL characters, rather than just token females, and she even manages some exploration of feminism and the challenges facing women now and then.)

Antique Bakery isn't yaoi or shounen-ai. It's a story about people working in a bakery and one of them happens to be gay.

I adore both Goong and JJH so will be mum on those but re: YEH. She is pretty strong-willed in Coffee Prince.

I don't know, she does have that energy and fun I associate with Makino. I can think of plenty of other actresses I'd prefer to the one that was cast, too (Han Ji Hye from Sweet 18, for example). GHS just looks all wrong to me and the bits of her I saw in Chil Woo (I didn't watch much of it, yikes...baaaaaad drama) didn't impress.

If Han Ga In, Han Ji Min, Sung Yuri or Ha Ji Won were a couple years younger...

Just am very very not impressed by GHS.

The thing about GHS is that it seems to be a reaction to her not being who they would have chosen based on minimal or no actual exposure, not anything about GHS herself.

How. On God's Green Earth. Can it be gayer than the manga.

XDDDDD Of cours,e I include in manga canon the like 14 doujinshi Yoshinaga wrote, because they were too explicit to be published officially. *ahem*

Ono with long hair is sexy. But it totally looks like it's going to be Ono/Tachibana, which is sad. Because I like Ono/Chikage. XDDDDD

Aside from Ono, I'm not sure who's who by names. I'd gather Ono/"one-with-sunglasses-but-the-second-one,-not-Joo-Ji-Hoon-aka-the-first-one-in-the-trailer."

YEH's character in Coffee Prince is much stronger than her character in Goong, so I think she could play a character like Makino well. But, she's a bad fit for this incarnation if simply because she's too old to play Makino. The guys they cast are babies. She'd look like she was in the university-edition and the rest of them were still playing it as high schoolers.

I haven't seen anything the girl who's actually been cast in the show has been in, but I'm just happy this thing seems to be moving forward again, so I'd have been pretty psyched for just about anyone.

I am apparently alone in thinking that the girl they cast looks cute and young enough that acting and makeup could make her pass for being young enough.

Aaaand now I see they're the same age, so never mind. I still maintain that it would be hard for me to accept YEH as a high schooler again, but who knows if GHS could convincingly do it.

Oh my! You just made my day... that trailer is brilliant. I didn't know a thing about this.

I read the first volume of the manga, but didn't care for it too much. I've been watching the anime though and that is enjoyable.

Just wanted to chime in about YEH's performance in Coffee Prince. I don't enjoy shoujo-ish K-drama as a rule, but Coffee Prince is just simply brilliant. Her performance in that is such that I don't think anyone else could have played that part.

And one of the things I loved about CP was that the 'rival' characters were fully developed and sympathetic. Also the hero is DREAMY. None of this Shin wishy washy nonsense (yes Goong hit all my shoujo annoyance buttons!)

Date: 2008-10-06 10:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
Yeah, Shin's wishy-washy-ness is only one of my collection of complaints against him.

Honestly, even though she was too much a character type and not enough of a character for me to really like her, I can understand why Chae-Gyung's so popular. I will never understand how people can like Shin, approve of any of his behavior, or find him sympathetic (your parents expect you to live up to the expectations of your station, why the entire country relies on your to do, and you'd rather sulk. Boo hoo.)

lol, I'm soooooo excited for antique bakery. I like JJH's character in The Devil. XDD And just saw up to ep. 12 Coffee Prince (the show is an ADDICTION, IT WILL RUIN MY LIFE), with KJW in it, so it'd be fun to see both JJH and KJW in the same movie. XD Especially since this trailer makes the movie look gayer than freshly cut pineapples on a tray. XD;;; *has no shame*

And blah about HYD. I shall be honest and say I hated all versions of it, from manga to anime to every variety of live-action tv show/movie that ever came out for it. But perhaps I'm just a disfunctional female or something, since it seems like everyone loves this show to death. ^^;;;

Date: 2008-10-07 12:12 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
The only version of HYD I really like is the jdrama, and, it being a while since I've seen it, I'm not sure how much that has to do with it, and how much with the cast itself. I do think the twdrama tried it's best, but it was too long, F4 couldn't act, and while Barbie Hsu was decent in the role (a much better actress than they were actors, at the least) she wasn't great. However, the form the violence takes there is too much for me, nd while I've tried desperately, I can't really tolerate the manga or anime.

I haven't seen The Devil. I've thought about it, but pics, clips and comments on JJH make me think too much of his role in Goong. And I'm an unusual female, it seems, because his character there is quite possibly my least favorite drama character ever, and this is a time where I have difficulty separating character and actor, much as I hate how so many seem to hold characters against performers. Antique Bakery, however, finally seems completely removed from that in every way.

MUCH, MUCH GAYER THAN THE MANGA. But the anime was pretty gayed up, so IDK--the Jdrama version was pretty much as absent of the ghei as the original manga was, so *shrugs* I mostly want to see this becaues of Kim Jae Wook (the glasses guy mackin' on everyone in the trailer ♥)
