A lot of what would normally be my reading time lately has been taken over by playing Hay Day, which is just a touch too addictive.

What are you currently reading

Rereading rarewomen canon.

Manna From Hades, A Colourful Death and The Valley of the Shadow by Carola Dunn. A trio of mysteries set in Cornwall in the 60s. The main characters are Eleanor Trewynn, a former world traveler who now works for a charity shop and practices judo, and her niece, Megan Pancarrow, a detective sergeant with the police force. The approach is fairly light and nostalgic, though it has some more serious subjects, such as sexism and racism. They won't go down as favorites, but I enjoyed them, and wish there were more. (Maybe there will be? The last one came out in 2012, but I think she's still mostly focused on the Daisy Dalrymple books, which I haven't read yet.)

Legend of the Condor Heroes: Book One by Jin Jong.

-The 2008 version that I watched pretty much left out most of what happened in about ch 2-6. And while I get not wanting to add 10 episodes to your series to detail Genghis Khan's rise to power and get to your protagonist being an adult, there were some pretty pertinent things that happened as far as Guo Jing's training and such that would have made some early episodes make a lot more sense.

-I confess to being bored until Huang Rong showed up. But now she is there and trolling everyone and thinking circles around all the men and plotting, and all is well.

-I could really do with less emphasizing on how Guo Jing's mother is a plain simple farmgirl and Yang Kang's mother is pure and has a sensitive heart.

-So far I mind Yang Kang and Wanyan Honglie much, much less than in the TV adaptation. Not trying to make Kang a poor woobie and admitting to his being a spoiled brat whose main redeeming quality is that he loves his mother doesn't make me like him more, but it makes him less annoying. I actually kind of like Wanyan Honglie, so far, but suspect that won't last.

-Though the above does make me question Ninanci's taste in men even more.

-I find it odd that I'm 1/4 through the book and at point where I was about 1/10th through the TV series.

What do you think you'll read next?

More rarewomen rereading, and I have a bunch of manga from the library, mostly newly released volumes of series I already follow.

I don't think I've done this since mid-December, but i also posted separately on most of what I read for a while though, so this is just for what I've read in January, but not posted on separately.

What are you currently reading

The Sum of All Kisses by Julia Quinn. Fluffy and entertaining Regency Romance. Like most Quinn books, I'm enjoying it, but will probably have forgotten half the details a week after having finished. At about 1/3 of the way through, the best bit has been the angsty, math genius hero very seriously debating the existence of unicorns with an eleven year old. (Spoiler: the eleven year old wins.)

Legend of the Condor Heroes by Jin Jong. I'm still in the first chapter, which is and Guo Jing and Yang Kang's fathers. It's fine so far, but I don't think i'll actually get into it until Huang Rong shows up.

What did you recently finish reading?

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. YA fantasy than has the conventional framework of "orphaned waif learns s/he is secretly of the magic upper class and is whisked away from humble beginnings (and no-longer-socially-appropriate childhood BFF) to court," except this Special Orphan is a girl, and her powers/supposed destiny aren't necessarily what we're led to believe. Loosely based on Russian history, the book isn't strikingly original in any description, it's just much better done than most of its type, which makes it feel much fresher. It also managed to feature a YA romantic triangle that didn't annoy me, which doesn't happen often.

"Hmm...I appear to be in love with my best friend, who might now be dead, and who I don't think was actually that interested in me to start with. But he's been gone for a while and this other guy is nice to me and is kinda hot is that dark and mysterious way-no, wait. He's actually an evil sociopath. No more of that. And it turns out my friend is still alive WE JUST MYSTERIOUSLY NEVER GOT EACH OTHER'S LETTERS. I think I'll force a sit down and we'll discuss this like intelligent, rational people. After everyone else stops trying to imprison and/or kill us."

Bronze no Tenshi Vol 1-3 by Chiho Saitou. Shoujo manga about Alexander Pushkin and his wife, Natalia Goncharov. It's 7 volumes total and I've enjoyed what I've read, but it was starting to drag a bit for me, so I'll get back to it later.

Remembrances for A Certain Pilot by Inumura Koroko. This is the basis for the anime movie The Princess and the Pilot, and the prequel to the books the airing anime The Pilot's Love Song is based on. This is an adventure novel about a young pilot in a world similar to early 20th century Europe* who is hired to secretly escort the prince's fiancee through several thousand miles of enemy airspace. For the large part, what you expect to have happen happens, and I was enjoying it in a rather relaxed way until i got to the end and realized I'd gotten invested without realizing it. I look forward to watching both the movie and the series.

*(Has anyone ever actually sat down and pondered the popularity of this kind of thing in japan? Not that i'm complaining at all, I just find it interesting.)

Pandora Hearts Vol 9-13 by Jun Mochizuki. These volumes were pretty backstory heavy (and I don't think mochizuki is anywhere near done with that yet), and also significantly darker than earlier volumes. Also about 50x as heavy with the "Alice in Wonderland" references. I am enjoying this series a lot, but wish there was more Ada and Alice, and less Vincent. I think there are several more volumes out in English, but the library don't have them yet.

What do you think you'll read next?

Probably another romance novel, or some YA.

[personal profile] yifu  asked "If you could pick an all-ladies crime-fighting team from wuxia canon, who would the members be?"

Here is my (probably totally predictable) lineup:

Huang Rong- Legend of the Condor Heroes & Return of the Condor Heroes
Lian Ni Shang-Legend of the White Haired Demoness/The Bride With White Hair
Yan San Niang-Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei
Wang Yan Yu & Xia Ling Shuang-Paladins in Troubled Times

I guess this could be said to be a Leverage-esque wuxia ladies crimefighting team, given that almost all of them have at least some criminal element in their past. Actually, there's a thief, a criminal mastermind, and a mountain bandit mixed in there, plus Huang Rong, whose youthful impulses weren't always on the upstanding side.

Huang Rong would be more in the Return of the Condor Heroes era, where she's pretty much the top dog in the martial arts world, and the rest are her super-elite crimefighting team. Except Ni Shang doesn't always bother showing up for missions (and when she does, she sometimes ends up leaving important people hanging upside down from trees and such) but she sends a dozen or so of her personal army of warrior maids to help out when she isn't in the mood. Yan Yu is the field leader, but Ling Shuang is the one who always deals with local authorities because Yan Yu makes them antsy. (They know her plots are effective, but she has plotted the destructions of martial arts sects and local governments, and made invasions fail before, and that can make people nervous.) Though sometimes the authorities get annoyed when their wives don't realize Ling Shuang is a girl at first at start ogling the hot young man.* San Niang isn't allowed to deal with local authorities because they annoy her so she steals from them, but she's the best infiltrator/scout ever.

*Ling Shuang is pretty much wuxia!Oscar in this regard.

I've only had a few takers, so there are still plenty of slots left if anyone else wants to leave a prompt.
