why not...

Snagged from various places:
a) I want to talk about how my ships and concept of shipping varies with fandom, so name a fandom and I'll discuss what I ship and what shipping means to me in that fandom.
b) I have a lot of fandoms. Have you ever wondered about one of the fandom I sometimes mention on my journal which you don't know of? Ask me any question you want about them!
ETA: Spoilers in comments for Bleach(non-explicit), FMA anime (one plotline explicit) and Twelve Kingdoms anime(non-explicit).
(Or if you see something in my tags or interets and I never talk about it, so you have no idea what I think about it, or whatever. Uhm...depending one what (a) is, you may or may not get a slightly wordier "bzuh?")

Date: 2008-10-26 04:11 am (UTC)I also think that a lot of shipping removes context, and without context, you have character types, not characters. Characters don't exist in a vacuum, and in fiction, it's often a relationship they do-or don't have that motivates them, or that influences what they do.

Date: 2008-10-26 04:17 am (UTC)I tend to think Kougaiji/Yaone is the closest thing Saiyuki will ever get to a canon pairing, and I'd be nuts for it if Sarah Connor Chronicales did Sarah/Ellison(kinda...I prefer Sarah unpaired, but if they ever decide they have to pair her with someone...) and things like that, and I tend to be fond of one-sided pairings, so you could say I ship A's love for B, but not really A/B (like, in Bleach, I'm really fond of Renji-to-Rukia and Orihime-to-Ichigo, but I don't really ship either pairing, or think either one is reciprocated, though i do tend to think that those would be the pairings if Tite Kubo ever actually paired anyone off)), but mostly, the appeal just escapes me. I do like "understood but not stated" pairings like Helen/Deneve in Claymore and Hawkeye/Mustang in Fullmetal Alchemist, and I suppose the canon status there is debatable, but they're still mostly things considered the official pairing.

Date: 2008-10-26 04:12 am (UTC)Or, you know. Whichever of that you want to talk about.
Actually, here's another general thing that interests me: pairings with a lot of subtextual evidence, but not enough that you can outright call them "canon." Yoruichi/Soi Fong is a good example. Where do you stand on those? For me, it's pairings like those that make me wonder how people can be fans of canon pairings alone...because sometimes the line just isn't that clear.

Date: 2008-10-26 04:31 am (UTC)The subtext evidence thing is a little more dicey, but I tend to look at it as "does this perceived subtext support or contradict that actual text?" And I tend to think that everything has to be viewed in the context of the work as a whole. Easy example(uhm...the Bleach example kinda cracks me up, as Tite Kubo will write-at least one sided-pretty much anything he thinks the fans will go for): FMA(manga canon...I do like the anime, but am vastly more into the manga). Ed/Winry is about as canon as it gets. Hawkeye/Mustang (which is my OTP there, and a big one) isn't stated, but is very obvious, and is not only the most logical interpretation, but in many ways, the only one that makes sense (especially if you pay attention to how other people approach her, and Mustang's conversations with various people, especially his contacts.) So, even though I'm much more interested in Hawkeye/Mustang, I can understand arguments against it, but I'll be more critical when it comes to alternate pairings with Ed (I don't think anyone pairs Winry off with someone else) than I will with alternate pairings for either of them.

Date: 2008-10-26 04:34 am (UTC)We love's Jean-to-Claire and Irene-to-Teresa. Sadly, I cannot see Claire as anything but straight. Yes. I know. Claire/Raki has some awesome angst potential. It is mildly concerning that the villains are the ones who seem to have close, loving relationships.
All that said, I'm pretty sure the Claymores are kinda asexual. Except for the evil ones.
Miria and Galatea are my goddesses.Wait, that has nothing to do with the question...(no subject)

Date: 2008-10-26 04:40 am (UTC)Misao/Aoshi only escapes my "raising your bride" squick because he missed her entering puberty, and because she's in the position of putting him back together after realizing he isn't the great hero she thought he was. Sometimes, I think I only really like him for her sake, though I do find him interesting in his own right.
The realy reason Sano ran away was because he found the "property of Megumi" tattoo. He'll be back.
Blondie-boy will one day get tired of Yahiko dancing around the bush with waitress girl (epic name recollection failure there...) and pull a Sano. Or load them up on aphrodisiacs and lock them in a bedroom for a week.

I'm sorry, did you say something?
(Ok, no, I do have deep and serious thoughts about Damo, I just have to get past my initial reactions...)
Really, it's an amazingly well crafted story about her struggle to be herself in a world that won't let her, and has some great messages about love and trust.

Date: 2008-10-26 04:41 am (UTC)"I like female characters. I don't love every one I ever come across, but it's rare that I understand the dislike directed at so many. Very often, when a female character I'm familiar with is called TSTL or a doormat, my reaction is "she's trying her hardest in a situation where she's way out of her league in a society that expects her to be a doormouse...give her a break."
I used to be an avid female character hater. And yet in the recent years, a few females have stepped forward and shown me the beauty in some characters that people hate. Like Colette from Tales of Symphonia. I still can't fathom how anyone would hate that girl but apparently people do! How could someone trying their hardest to protect those they love and trying to care for everyone they come across inspire so much hate?
And to the meme, Otogi Zoshi - another fantastic series I need to finish.

Date: 2008-10-26 05:46 am (UTC)Wonder Woman (specifically, Hiketeia) is what mainly got me into DC comics, and it and BoP helped rejuvenate my superhero love when Marvel almost killed it. I don't post on it much because I'm in a "Marvel and DC are annoying me" stage. I also tend to only post on things as I read/watch installments, instead of all the time. I abmit, i am one of those who's a bit disdainful of pre-Crisis WW, but I've come to appreciate that more in recent years.

Date: 2008-10-26 02:20 pm (UTC)b) Basara is my favorite shoujo manga, no exceptions. It has complex plot and characterizations and one of favorite manga pairings, and never takes the easy road just because it can. A good review of the series: http://dearauthor.com/wordpress/2008/01/15/review-manga-review-epic-adventure-and-romance-basara/

Date: 2008-10-26 08:29 pm (UTC)b) Damo is a Korean miniseries set in the 17th century about a woman who was born into the upper classes but whose status is changed to that of a servant after her father is declared a traitor. She grows up (and trains) alongside the illegitimate son of an official, and follows him into the police force. Eventually, she's sent undercover to investigate rebels, and has to choose between him and the leader of the rebels. That is the extremely spazzing out free, spoiler free version.
