Only one of which I actually watched in the last month, I think.

The Fall: So, the next time I watch a movie with really bright colors, exceptionally creative costumes, random extreme crack and it's extremely enjoyable at first glance then increasingly iffy the more you think about it, I'm just going to assume it's a Tarsem Singh movie. (I mean, I'll be wrong most of the time if I do that, but I'm at 3-for-3 there with his movies, so...) I recall this being pretty big in my circles when it was new and kept meaning to watch it and then forgetting. Despite almost yelling "STOP TRAUMATIZING THE CHILD!" every few minutes (often in conjunction with "Who makes up this kind of story for a 5-year-old anyway?") and going "WTF?" at about 3/4 the developments in Roy's story (often followed by "uhm...no..." and maybe "Dude, why are you a stuntman? G write books.") I enjoyed this, though I'm not sure how much I'll like a rewatch. Also, the little girl who played Alexandria was possibly the most adorable and realistic kid to ever appear in a Hollywood movie.

Ip Man & Ip Man 2: These movies are basically about 3 1/2 hours of Donnie Yen walking around in a state of kung fu nirvana. Ip Man (or Yip Man) was Bruce Lee's mentor an largely responsible for the spread an popularity of Wing Chun. The movies are well cast an acted (Except: China, why o you keep casting Huang Xiao Ming as a hotheaded teen? The dude's in his mid-30s. Actually, maybe late-30s now. Not that he isn't good and all, but...), but the main raw is the martial arts displays, which are stunning. The first movie is excellent an stands well on its own. The secon is largely a worthy followup an also a good movie, but suffers from a case of trying to outdo it's predecessor, losing some of what made the first work in the process. (In particular, Ip Man's martial arts and personal life aren't as well balanced, and the fight senes rely a bit more of effects and flash, and not quite as much on skill.) The movies are highly redcommended for martial arts fans.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides: Pretty obviously an attempt to keep the franchise going before people stop caring and move on, it's largely fun but the characters I was most interested in are gone? (Off being pirate kings and dead/undead.) I think I finished the third movie ready to watch Jack and Barbossa chase each other around the Caribbean for a few hours then had reconsidered that within a couple weeks. But it was fun and I liked Anjelica (Though wasn't big on how her plot ended-hopefully she torments Jack a lot in the next movie. Odd courtship rituals those 2 have. Also, wasn't she supposed to have a pretty noticable scar?) an kin of want to applaud whoever decided that the world needed and angsty forbidden romance between a priest and a mermaid. (Sam Claflin is trying to be in all the epics isn't he?)

Red Cliff: (The almost 5 hour version, not the heavily edited US release.) I had tried watching this a while back but was turned off by the fact that the only woman in the first half hour threw herself doen a well about 5 minutes after the opening credits ended. (I'd been told there were 2 major female characters who were excellent and believed what I was told, but lacked the patience to wait for them.) The movie is pretty good and I can actually see it being longer before I can see it being shorter. The battle scenes were some of the best I've seen in a movie yet were actually among the less interesting parts, and the scheming and strategizing and spying were actually more interesting, and the cast was generally excellent. (I don't think Lin Chi-Ling had quite the screen presence needed for Xiao Qiao, but more from inexperience than lack of ability. I actually can't help but think the role was written for Fan Bing Bing, or someone like her.) One of these days, I'll get aroun to reaing The Romance of Three Kingdoms or watching the recent series based on it, but the inevitable long stretches with no women in sight on't help with motivation.

The Runaways: Indie movie about Joan Jett and Cherie Currie when they were members of the rock band "The Runaways." Pretty good, though, though a bit heavy on the bad language and drug use for me. (Not a criticism, as it's pretty accurate to my understanding, and what I went in expecting.) I thought it did a particularly good job with it's portrayal of the music scene and rise and fall of musicians at the time, and especially thought Kristen Stewart did a good job with the androgynous screen presence.

Taken: Largely fun and fastpaced though sometimes iffy action movie that has Cuck levels of casting geekery. As in, Shannon from Lost is the daughter of Ra's Al Ghul and Jean Grey, her stepfather is Percy from Nikita, and her best friend is the original Ruby (and only one i saw) from Supernatural. I was somewhat in awe of the casting. Inescapable comparisons to Missing, which came along several years later, but I suspect helped enhnce my "Well, actually, modern human slavery isn't just something that happens to rich white American girls foolish enough to tell the first person that they meet that they're all alone in an unfamiliar city..."

Underworld: Awakening: A somewhat bad movie that is fabulous because it has lots of Kate Beckinsale in pleather, shooting things and badass little girls and fun tropes with a side of women bonding (often over corpses they just created). I mean, If you didn't watch the first 2 (the 3rd is a separate matter) for Kate Beckinsale in pleather, shooting things, I'm not sure what you got out of it. (Mind you, if you take out the first 6 minutes of flashbacks and infodumping and the last 10 minutes of credits, you have about 75 minutes of a plot that's pretty much Selene Doing Violent Stuff with stuff to justify it.) Also, Dyson from Lost Girl is there as a scary evil werewolf. I figure his agent heard they were looking for a scary werewolf prone to ripping off his clothes and sent some footage over. Inevitable sequel, please do not be set 10~ years later and pair Eve and David.

The Warring States: A 2011 movie set in China's "Warring States" era, focusing on Sun Bin and his role in the conflict between the Qi and Wei kingdoms. A bit hit and miss in places but overall enjoyable for most of the movie. I think I preferred the first half, which was largely taken up by Sun Bin's attempts to court a rather violent and temperamental enemy commander, (First scene: She leads an army into battle. Second scene: She executes captured enemy soldiers. Third scene: Her army has been infiltrated and she singlehandedly takes down a few dozen enemy soldiers on foot. Most of the courtship consists of her attacking him anytime the awkward courting results in the stirring of icky feelings.) but the second half had major highlights too, particularly everything involving and leading up to a jailbreak. The costumes, fight/battle scenes and acting were all good, but nothing incredibly original. Worth watching, but warning for a long period of torture towards the middle.

Yeh Vaada Rada: Wonderfully cheesy and cracky 80s Bollywood mmovie about an unsuitable young singer who is disfigured in a car accident, after which her (rich heir to a corporation) boyfriend is told she's dead and proceeds to grow and emo beard and spend months mooning over a 5 foot tall snapshot of her. And then she returns with a new face after plastic surgery but thinks he's moved on. The first part was kind of meh but entertaining, but from the plastic surgery onward it was a blast. I am especially fond of the cheesy sound effects, especialy the OMG SUSPENSEFUL horror movie music that played in her operations and whenever someone saw her after the accident.

So, am I the last person in the world to see this? I think I probably am. It was just TOO LONG to go see in theaters.

Anyway...I liked it. Not that it should surprise anyone, as I am VERY EASY to please when it comes to adventure and swashbuckling(as long as it really is swashbuckling...yes, I remain bitter over my non-swashbuckler set of epic swashbucklers.) The first movie, of course, remains by far the best, but I'm happy with both sequels.

Mostly, I'm just happy that awful Jack/Elizabeth thing was almost completely dropped(as much as could be without pretending it never happened. Here's the thing, it doesn't matter if you like Will/Elizabeth, Jack/Elizabeth, Jack/Will, think they should be a threesome, think Will's a loser, think Elizabeth's a hussy, think romantic subplots are dumb, or whatever. The simple fact is that within the first 25 minutes of the first movie, it was obvious that Will/Elizabeth was the epic romance, and that their romance would be a major plot of the movie/series(especially the part where they like to tear apart the Caribbean looking for each other), and that there was no way it was ever going to go any other way(let's face it, one thing you can count on in a swashbuckler is that it's going to have a clear-cut epic romance to help carry the story.) The hints of Jack/Elizabeth in the second movie was, IMO, very mean, as it was clearly catering to the people who wanted that to lead them on, but with no intention of following through on it. Will and Elizabeth's chief motivation throughout all three movies was saving the others, and what Elizabeth did to Jack was essentially a higher stakes version of what she did to Norrington in the first movie...using his attraction to her to get what she wants(Will.) They just played it to cater to the Jack/Elizabeth shippers to make sure they came back, with no intent of actual delivery.

(And if you ask me my opinion on the importance of the relationship between Jack, Will and Elizabeth, I'd say Will and Elizabeth taught Jack how to care about other people, and Jack pulled them out of their narrow little social class defined lives so they could go after what they wanted and pursue a life of their choice, instead of staying the way they were and being miserable. That, and their all learning that no one is inherently good or bad, it's all about the choices you make and what you do with your life.)

A few quick comments beyond that(and if you haven't seen it yet-though I'm pretty sure everyone has- then START SCROLLING NOW TO ESCAPE SPOILERS because I'm too lazy to use a cut) because it's late and bedtime:

*Ok, seriously, what kind of blackmail material does Keira Knightley have over Jerry Bruckheimer to get to kiss half the guys in this series? Were they just trying to cover all possible het shipping possibilities? If so, then we should probably be greatful they didn't find an excuse for Elizabeth to kiss Barbossa, too.

*How much does it suck to be Norrington? Will's supposed to be the naive one(though really, I think he got over that midway through the second movie) but really, it's Norrington. Will learned, but poor Norrington was really just too naive(and blindly in love with Elizabeth) to ever stand a chance. Only real mistake he ever made was being in love with a girl in with someone else who will sacrfice anything and anyone for the other guy. Even his "betrayal"(which really wasn't one, as he didn't owe any of them anything, but rather, lost everything because he helped them) was just his trying to get back what had been taken from them.

*It took far, far too long for Jack to show up. Seriously. (And then there were just too many characters altogether, honestly.)

*Was anyone able to keep up with all the betrayals? At all? I think I did for the first hour, then I just gave up and waited for the hijinks and fights. One day, I should count all the betrayals in all three movies(and I should do the same thing with Jason Bourne and his tendency to wreck cars with the Bourne trilogy)

*I'm not sure if that was the best or the worst wedding ever. Certainly very poorly timed. But then, look what happened when they tried to do it the proper way...

*If I didn't know the part of the curse that got cut from the movie(that the reason Davy Jones was so mad at Calypso for not being there after the first 10 years was because if your true love is waiting faithfully for you, then the curse is broken) I'd be rather annoyed. All that and you only get to have sex one day every ten years? Especially given what they went through to have it legally? Would suck. And we've already seen how irked Elizabeth gets when she expects to get to have sex with Will and doesn't.

*So, who else thinks that Jack and Barbossa will now spend the next few decades stealing the Black Pearl from each other and bickering their way across the seven seas?

I will now post an MV of the trilogy and head to bed:

Just because I'm away from  my hard drive with hundreds and hundreds of pics stored on it does NOT mean anyone gets to escape.  As long as the obsession is at the forefront, you must all suffer.

This is just a list with a few pics for each of my favorite fantasy movies(and yes, I just reused some pics).  The only order is alphabetical.

I blame this on  [personal profile] dangermousie.  (Actually, a lot of my LJ this last year can be blamed on her as she is the ultimate pusher.  Anyway...)

This is in absolutely no order whatsoever (simply what I clicked on first in the photobucket folder, and amount of pictures is basically whatever a 5 minute google search turned up), just my 10 favorite Big Screen romances spawned from the US.

Apparently, it takes a lot to qualify if you don't pick up a sword or other blade at least once.  This could explain why only 2 1/2 are from this century...

with pics )

Why yes, I do like 5-6 doses of adventure with my romance...

So, anyone who's even peaked at the romance novel aisle at the bookstore or supermarket knows that romance novels often have, at best, questionable covers(as in "why would anyone think this would sell a book?")  There have, though, been some pretty good ones the last few years.  Right now I'm reading Patricia Waddell's futuristic romance True Blood(short version of the plot is that it's about a diplomat and her super-deadly bodyguard investigating the serial murders of the descendants of his race's royalty...pretty good so far, more a mixture of adventure and romance than a romance novel, but that's what works best for futuristics)

Anyway, I really like the front cover:

I like the back cropping much better, though-pushes them off to the left side so that the left half is almost solid black and his head his at the very top...very nice and atmospheric)  Sadly, can't find a pic of that.

Also, [profile] ceruleansan linked me to this bit of awesomeness: the trailer for the first PotC movie, only with the FMA characters acting it out:

[info]prozacpark tagged me for this the other day, though I've seen it before.

Six Ships I Love
1. Laura Holt/Remington Steele (Remington Steele)
2. Shuri/Sarasa (Basara)
3. Chae-Ohk/Hwangbo Yoon (Damo)
4. Sara/Ian (Witchblade)
5. Kyo/Yuya (Samurai Deeper Kyo)
6. Will/Elizabeth (Pirates of the Caribbean)

SIX????  I CAN ONLY HAVE SIX???  Shouldn't I at least be allowed 10?  This meme is MEAN by only allowing you such a small number...No real order...just which popped to mind first...the first three will pretty much ALWAYS immediately pop to mind, though.

Three Ships I Liked, But Don't Anymore
7. Nightwing/Oracle (DC Comics)
8. Wes/Fred (Angel)
9. Paige/Jono (Generation X)

This was actually harder...I rarely STOP liking ships...it's more like "something happened to make the shipping irrelevant anyway" than "liked, but don't anymore"

Three Ships I Don't Like
10. Scott/Emma (X-Men)
11. Jack/Elizabeth (Pirates of the Caribbean)
12. Sara/Gleason (Witchblade)

Now that?  Appalling easy.

Two Ships I Am Curious About, But Don't Actually Ship
13. Spike/Ilyria (Angel)
14. Jayne/River (Firefly/Serenity)

*looks at the questions*  HEY! Can I go back and changes the order a bit?  No? Darn.

I tried as hard as I could to avoid spoilers.  I think anything that's a spoiler is a year to several years old for US comics.

I hereby tag everyone on my flist who's remotely prone to shipping and hasn't done this yet, and think those who have should link me to their posts in case I missed it.

ETA:  The OTP in the icon is Sara/Ian.  Strong, capable heroine who kicks serious butt. but whose personal life is a shambles + hot, angsty assassin obsessed with her and their shared destiny=complete win.

  • Spiderman 3-Can't work up any interest.  Liked the first movie a lot, missed the second one in theaters and have never seen it as whole.  Have seen hefty chunks at various times, though, and pretty much been bored.  Also?  They've already done Gwen with MJ.  Like the Ultimate titles, there's really no point in bringing Gwen in now because her story's already been done.  Yeah, that's the comic book fan in me talking as opposed to the movie goer, but there you have it.
  • Comics-Speaking of comics, April's comics are on their way here and I still have some February and a number of March titles sitting there unread.  Some titles, like 52, it's because they're rather daunting, and others, like Blade of the Immortal and Jack of Fables are NSFW in one of the issues I'm backed up on, but mostly, I think I'm just disassociating myself with comics in general.  It tends to happen when Marvel messes with Thunderbolts(last time they revamped it, my pull list was 3 comics, 2 of which were minis, and then I discovered CrossGen)  I need a new comic to get excited about.  Yeah, Black Canary by Tony Bedard is a step in the right direction, but it's a minor excitement, not enough for me to really get worked up about.  Scratch some of that-mailman just knocked on the door with April comics.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean-Can't wait for POTC 2, and seriously hope the right 'ship wins out.  And by that I mean Will/Elizabeth.  Because, yeah, Jack/Elizabeth have chemistry, but it's the "Hot sex and kill each other in a month if we get together" kind.  I'll take the 'ship that actually has a chance at a happy life and a loving relationship.  Not to mention they're the ones who tend to do things like tear up the Caribbean looking for each other and be willing to do anything for each other.  Sorry, but, in comparison to Will, Jack barely registers on Elizabeth's radar(actually, that's true of anything that's not Will except for her father and possibly Norrington, and that's mostly out of guilt)  If the kraken had been after Will, well, Elizabeth certainly wouldn'tr have done what she did to Jack to him.  And the compass bit?  It's the freedom and lifestyle that attracts her, not the man.  (None of this is to say that I don't adore Jack because I do.)
  • Manga-I need a new manga to get excited about.  Red River is a possibility, but I don't know.  You know my wants-good story, swords, usually fantasy or historical, interesting characters, hopefully a bit or romance, etc.  That said, the most recent new manga I got excited about was Chika Shiomi's stuff(shojo horror, strong heroine centric), and before that, Full Metal Alchemist(Shonen action, alternate history, very plot and setup driven, 'ships are great but almost never a main focus, which is part of why they're great), so obviously I'm not TOO strict about some points.
  • (I say I want a new series to get excited about, but I still have a backlog and a stack of stuff that's just come out that I don't have yet...)
  • The Golden Age-Wish it was out already.  Probably the only movie coming out this year besides POTC 3 that I'm excited about.
  • Books-I probably need to leave off fantasy/urban fantasy for a bit out of fear of burning out.  Unfortunately, I don't seem to currently have my hands on many other books I feel like reading that isn't in that genre.

*starts food and starts sorting through the box of comics*
